In the 1970’s, Leeds-born Jake Thackray was one of the most popular entertainers in Britain, appearing weekly on television and filling concert halls. Central to this appeal was the mix of humour and dark wit rooted in the perceived  ‘Northern’ Englishness of his work, yet his major musical influences came from French traditions of chanson and in particular the work of Georges Brassens.  How did this unusual mix come about and how did it become so genuinely and wildly popular?  What is ‘Northern’ about his work?  In this talk we will look at Jake Thackray’s music, words and TV appearances to seek answers.
