This is a brief note of thanks to all who came along to Edinburgh on Friday and Saturday: the performers, of course, but also everyone who made it, for me, an enjoyable weekend. I look forward to seeing the photographs when they appear and catching up on all the things that I was too stressed out to enjoy for myself!

Thanks must go to Ian and Phil for all the hard work and time that went into creating a superbly organised and highly enjoyable weekend of events. The combination of open mike evening, French lunch and traditional Jakefest night was excellent. It was super to see so many familar faces again, to welcome Paddy Finnegan as a performer and welcome back Mike Chiswell after too long an absence from performance – top notch contributions from both. The Topica Ladies did us proud once again, although I haven’t quite come to terms with the vision of ‘Big Bad Terrence’ (Grant) in a nun’s outfit.
The Von Trapp family (explanation in the programme) greatly enjoyed the company of one and all. Should Salzburg be the venue for a future Jakefest? Hmm…

David, Edwina and Ian, and I have now posted some photos on to the Yahoo site – low res though as we’ve nearly reached capacity!
What a great weekend – beautifully organised, excellent variety.
Friday night – cellar bar in a very old part of Edinburgh, with floor singers, bar open as long as we wanted it (the discovery that you can get Magners cider here, made by Bulmers in Ireland, and I thought Bulmers was in Hereford, I’m confused; we can’t get Magners in my bit of England anyway) (sorry, minor diversion). Great relaxed atmosphere, chance to catch up with folks, and just chill out. We were welcomed by a beautiful sunset and a gorgeous rainbow as we headed towards Princes Street – magic! (That was just before our Italian meal)
Saturday, and lunch in the French restaurant listening to Brassens and to our singers singing his songs, Jake’s songs translated into French would you believe?, new singer (sorry, I’ve forgotten your name), delicious food, friendly and efficient staff coping with an influx of 50 as if it happens all the time. Perfect.
Saturday night, and the Jakefest proper. But we were such a quiet audience! Or perhaps we were just being polite. All the singers were so good, what a wealth of talent. And we were treated to Keiwit’s debut at a Jakefest! He was a triumph; found just the right words every time, made us laugh, made us join in! Great to meet him and Kim – she’s a lucky – and lovely – lady! And another debut in the form of Paddy – who’s been trying to join a Jakefest for ages – very glad you made it this time Paddy – now you must make a habit of it! The younger members did us proud – Claire, Jenny, William – Jake’s memory lives on as long as they’re around! Bertie nearly did it right this time! Clive, you made me cry again, with your performance of Remembrance. The BBC were there, but you wouldn’t have known it if we hadn’t been told.
Lots of fliers, good enough to frame and hang on your wall, and as a special touch, programmes! With a contribution from Ralph McTell, photos of most of the performers, bar open all evening.
Absent friends, you were missed: Keith D, Judith, DavidH, Cynthia, Sarah, Frankie, Keith C, Joe E, Joe C and friend, to name but a few. We knew you were there in spirit though.
A great weekend Ian and Phil; now enjoy your well deserved rest!
I’d like to add my thanks and congratulations to Ian and Phil for organising and co-ordinating a highly successful weekend – much of which Kay and I spent at Birmingham International Airport !
I would personally like to congratulate the singers and performers – when you see the results of all the e-mails, phone calls and spreadsheets it makes it all worth the while as a baggsymeister. So a big HURRAY to the entirely splendid cast : Ian Burdon, Phil Neal, Phil McGinity, Matty Forbes (many thanks for the guitar, Matty), Paddy Finnegan, Clive Hollins, Paul Thompson, Clare Morgan and her sidekick, Paul, Jenny and William Thompson, Tony Cima and Brian Harvey (more beer please next time !), Mike Chiswell, Jamie McCoan, and the award-winning appearance of Big Bad Terence D’Asbo and the Topica Ladies !

I received a copy of the programme from Pam yesterday, for which many thanks.
What a first class production, Ian, I hope you were selling it for a
substantial amount in order to boost the archive recovery fund! I wonder
how many people noticed your signature in the narrow white band framing the front cover.I was quite struck actually at the way the group seems to have grown in
confidence, to feel able to issue pictures and CVs in a souvenir of this
calibre. A collector’s item of the future, I hope. I said last year at
Torrington that I felt the Project had taken a big step forward with the
quality of that event, and although I wasn’t there in Edinburgh, I hope
I am right in thinking that once again the group has strengthened its
position as THE Jake Thackray Heritage Project.
