Hi there. Not been on this forum in forever, in fact I had completely forgotten of its existence until I spotted something in the Radio Times and thought I should let fellow Jake fan know about it!
Bit late (not too late!) but tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 6th May 2014 at 16:30 hours) there is a radio programme on BBC Radio 4 (UK) called ‘Great Lives’… It’s a kind of biography programme where a well known person will talk about someone who has been important to them/who inpsired them etc. And they wax lyrical about that person to the presenter, Matthew Paris, usually with an ‘expert witness’ to give more information on the subject etc.
Anyway tomorrow’s edition is about Jake Thackray who is being ‘presented’ by Isy Suttie, a comedienne/actress/singer-songwriter. She’s in the sitcom The Peep Show but also does lots of her own shows and is a bit of a female troubadour I suppose you’d say.

Can’t believe it – a whole programme about Jake; and John Watterson, aka Fake Thackray, is also featured. Hope the techno’s here can find a way to save it or download it to this website or to youtube or something, so anyone who misses it can at least catch it.
Hi there. I did things the wrong way round, which is par for the course for me. I heard the radio programme first and then I heard about this site. Already having a couple of Jake’s CD’s I thought, why not. So here I am.

Did anyone manage to hear the programme yet?
I just listened via the iplayer. Tbh I was a little disappointed. Mainly because it wasn’t long enough and didn’t have much of Jake’s music in it… But always good to hear him and that people are still discovering and appreciating him/his talent.. And I did enjoy ‘Fake Thackeray’s interpretation of J’s song. Oh and he plugged this site!I hadn’t realised quite how unsure of himself and his abilities he was 🙁
Sure it’s been discussed on here or elsewhere but despite some of his lyrics Ive never considered that Jake was a misogynist as the presenter suggested…
Anyway hope others caught the show?
I am listening now on the published link as I was sleeping when it was on; I have to say that I am now on shift; 21.30 to 07.30, so this was the best opportunity. I regard Jake’s lyrics about women as being rather in awe, rather than he being a misogynist.
Yes, it is short, but anything which brings the great man back into public awareness has to be good. Lovely to hear John as part of the show.I too was disappointed, as they played only snippets of his songs. I didn’t feel it gave a satisfactory idea of his very special qualities. And wasn’t it rather strange that they gave a lead-in for The Black Swan and then didn’t play it at all? Still, the plug for the website has brought us a new member.
Thanks for giving us the prompt anyway. I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it.
I listened via iPlayer. I think for any Thackoraks (who on here did coin that one?) it would never have been long enough. I really did like FT’s homage, it was very Jake-esque. Also very happy to have learned via the programme of Jake articles for the Catholic Herald – a new seam for me to mine as they appear to be available via their online archive – read one already and I can hear his dulcet tones right through it. Also very please for the download link to the programme.
Caught this and enjoyed it – not much that was new for us diehards, but always nice to hear people talking about their enthusiasm for JT and there were some nice insights from Issy and John.
Agree with the comments on this thread about Jake’s alleged misogyny – I can understand why someone might get that impression on a first hearing of On Again On Again, but of course that’s not really what the song’s about, and so many of Jake’s other songs are written about women from a protective/sympathetic/admiring standpoint.
I’d not heard that ‘censored’ version of Family Tree before – presumably from a radio or TV session. Anyone know?
Following on from the programme, Gideon Coe played Caroline Diggeby Pratte on his excellent 6Music show on Wednesday night. Gideon plays quite a lot of archive session stuff on his show so I’ve emailed him to ask if there’s any chance of some vintage Jake from the archive!
