No, don’t laugh, but honestly … is it just me or is anyone else fascinated by morris dancing? We found ourselves in the middle of a Morris Festival in Bampton, Oxon this year and it was enjoyable and energetic – even the grandkids seem to like it. Just wondering what Jake would have made of it all …
Every August, we go to Whitby for the Folk Week. I like to think Jake would be a regular there if he were still around. There are such a variety of performers and Morris sides dance all around the town every day just adding to the ambience. It is also, of course, in Yorkshire, so he would have felt completely at home. Luckily, there are still some who use observation of the comical aspects of the singing and dancing to craft poetry and songs, perhaps not as well-crafted as some of Jake’s, but certainly in a similar idiom; cf. Les Barker, John Connolly and others.
Good Morris is a joy to behold, especially(IMHO) Cotswold Morris though I’m partial to NW Processional too. Several years ago I managed to find myself at Holmfirth Festival with both the Jake Thackray Experience and Mons Meg Rapper, in one case finishing the afternoon gig in the Old Bridge then sprinting round to another pub in time to grab a sword and dance in the bar.
