Sleeve Notes:

This cd is a remastered copy of a broadcast show by Jake on the British Forces Broadcasting Service programme “Forces Folk” in 1982. The show captures Jake in his prime with a responsive audience, accompanied by his long term bass player Alan Williams and features eight songs and some classic banter with the audience.

The master tape no longer exists in the BFBS archive. This recording comes from a secondary source and we are grateful to BFBS for their permission to remaster and reproduce the recording. The remastering was expertly done by David Shearer at Norwick Mastering. In finalising this version for release we had to make some choices: some background crackle can be heard occasionally and this has been left in because removing it resulted in an overall lessening of sound quality. We chose to release the version with the best overall quality.
This is the second release under the auspices of the Jake Thackray Project which exists to try and keep Jake’s songs alive and available to admirers old and new. We aim to do this both by arranging regular live performances of his music and by working to identify archive material suitable for release.

Any profits from this release will go into a fund to secure the rights to other performances for future release.

'Magnificent' (The Independent)

'Jake Thackray and Songs', broadcast in 1981, captures him at the height of his powers; it paints an intimate portrait of Jake as a live artist, playing to audiences in the small venues where he felt most comfortable.

This BBC-licensed DVD, professionally produced from the original BBC masters, features all of Jake's performances from the series: thirty of his greatest songs, along with his inimitable between-songs chat and storytelling.

Also included are previously unreleased performances by three outstanding guest artists: Ralph McTell, Alex Glasgow and Pete Scott.
