Can anyone give me any help with the picking of this song? I just cant get the hang of how Jake did it. I think hes doing something like dropping his index finger off from c to b on the second string, hammering it back on again and picking the top 3 strings together immediately afterwards. I just cant seem to get it to sound right. He does some other tricky stuff like this in statues, but I got the hang of that after a while.

Hi Bob… do you know any source that might give a hint as to Jake’s intended meaning to this song? My guess is that it is a parody of the kind of hellfire, “there’s odd goings on out in the hills!” sermons given by certain preachers, either in self-delusion or as a tool to ‘put the fear of God into the peasants’ kind of thing (the joke being of course that there *is* no such ladies magic circle club, not would there ever likely to be) and made all the more funnier by the suggestion that the dancing is by fat middle-aged ladies and ‘rub a dub dub.’ Lovely lyrics. I just wish I could be sure of my interpretation of it, the reason being if I am doing a gig of Jake’s songs it would be nice I feel to take 10 seconds to ‘set the context’ before the song.

Also the very mention of the Epilogue will raise a knowing eyebrow or two.
As for the meaning, I always assumed it came from one of those conversations after a few pints; either that or a fleeting glimpse of a faintly witch-like figure while driving through Cass after a gig…A song which I enjoy performing. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was based on a News Report or somesuch back in the Braden’s Week/That’s Life days

These comments have intrigued me – a song I don’t remember at all! Will have to find a recording now and have a listen…I knew I should have bought the full boxed Jake before now!
As I have said on other posts, I have never tried to play his songs the way Jake played. Apart from being bloody difficult, he always said that he wrote them to be played by different people in their own style – a major part of “the folk process”.Ian Burdon wrote:

Wonderful posting Ian! I’ll never know how I’ve missed this song out in the past – I’ve now heard you and Jake do it (recorded, of course) and must add it to my list. I have to say, your rendition is a perfect example of how Jake intended performers to “put their own spin” on the songs. I keep seeing people trying to play songs purely from the tabs on some sites, without “performing” them. You have demonstrated how to do it properly!
I think I only really (knowingly) depart from Jake’s arrangements on three songs – Castleford Ladies, Thomas Haverley and The Black Swan and of these the biggest deviation is Thomas Haverley (because I don’t like the way Jake plays it). For the rest I stay fairly close to Jake except that he had bigger hands than me and was a genius.
