Hello fellow Jake fans. I’m not that new to this site but never posted before. I’m 28 and never knew Jake even existed till a few years ago. I’m a huge Brel fan and first listened to him when I saw a small bit in Telegraph Review section comparing his stuff to Brel’s.
Anyway, apologies if this is a predictable and repeatd question but I searched around and couldn’t find it. I have the Jake In A Box set and the live album. Was wondering what other Jake songs are out there that I don’t have and that are available. I was just reading about The Remembrance (a beautiful song indeed) being on a deleted vinyl album. What others are there?thanks
Hi Marlowe. I hope this info is what you’re after.
The discography and songs sections of this site are comprehensive. The Songs tab is almost complete – a few lyrics of recently surfaced songs are missing, but they will be posted in the near future.
To see whether a particular song is available, click the "Records" tab and choose "Albums And CDs", and you’ll see every album released by Jake. The first five are currently available, and you can see which songs are on them by clicking their names; the rest can often be found affordably second-hand on eBay. (The Project CD is an exception: that is very rarely sold.)
Jake songs are also included on a few compilation albums, but none that aren’t available on Jake’s own.

So, am I right in thinking that songs like The Remembrance and The Bull were never recorded in a studio? And am I also right in thinking that there are many other Jake songs that were neither recorded in a studio nor exist as live recordings? I remember in the Jake doc it saying that he was writing a song a week to order for TV shows and that which suggests that there are many ‘lost’ Jake songs.T
The Time Has Told Me blog has a bootleg of his performance at the Three Horseshoes Club in Hampstead in 1979, which includes three songs not on Jake in a Box or Live Performance: The Remembrance, The Bull and One of Them.
You can see Jake perform The Bull on YouTube, and I’ve found covers of two of his songs that aren’t on the CDs, Our Dog and Lullaby My Daddio – performed by the same guy, who’s bound to be a regular here.

The songs section of this site has the lyrics to all of the songs of which we are aware (or will have once "Bermhouse" is added). There have been indications of other songs which are not recorded – the documentary had a tantalising opening of "The Municipal Workers’ Song" and the late Ian Watson said that Jake sang a couple of others to him on a car journey once including, I think, "The Appalling Mr Kinnell".
I would not be at all surprised if more turn up but they are likely to be in notebook form or on old cassettes in attics if anywhere.
As for the "song a week" thing – yes, that should mean more material but if it exists in the BBC archive we haven’t found it. Of course it may have been indexed under something else but it could just be that the tape has been destroyed.
The Bull and The Remembrance do exist in the BBC archive – it was used in the documentary – but last time we tried to get material out of there for distribution the fees were way too high.
Another which exists in two slightly different versions in the TV and the Radio archive is "Cenotaph"
As regards the comparisons with Brel, the better comparison is with Georges Brassens to whom you should listen immediately, if not sooner!

Yes, Brassens is someone that I should investigate. It was the article I read that compared Jake to Brel. That said, I think that lyrically Jake does have some in common with Brel too.
Thanks for the tip off about the recording you have come across – a real treasure trove of material, including a live performance of Billy Kershaw.

Great performance from both of yez. I tried to play it from the tabs at this site and couldn’t get past "brother riff-raff, we were heroes" without choking up. Powerful song.
