Really cannot wit to watch the DVD. My friend introduced me to Mr Thackray’s music a few short months ago and I have never looked back. As my friend has no access to the world wide web (unbelievable but true), I’m fairly sure he is unaware of the DVD’s existence…..Until he opens his Christmas present!!
5 stars on Amazon on the way…..:-)I have a friend who subscribes to Mojo magazine. He tells me that they’ve heaped fulsome praise on the new DVD. May be worth checking out (as they say).
🙂Thanks to all concerned for this unbelieveably good dvd. I have just experienced the worst few months of my life; For various reasons, I couldn’t get any of our dvd players (even the laptops) working until two days ago! Just imagine having a dvd of Jake performing 30 of his songs and not being able to even hear it!
This has to be the best example of live performances by any singer/songwriter ever.
The “talking between the songs” shows just how good Jake was, even when obviously terrified – I have never before seen a performer sweat as much as I do. It is pure nervousness.
Something tells me I shall be playing this dvd to everyone who visits us for the foreseeable future.Sorry to hear that you have been having a hard time of things, David, and so pleased that you are enjoying the DVD so much. The feedback from all quarters has truly been wonderful (as I had hoped, given the quality of Jake’s performances!). Mojo’s 5 star review this month only confirms what many of us knew: ‘exceptional’ is the key word. 🙂
Jake was a nervous performer, but I think that the sweat has a lot to do with massive television lights being squeezed into small pubs and theatres…

(I wonder if we’ll ever get that out on c.d. ????)Getting the Jake Thackray and Songs vinyl LP out on CD is a very attractive idea, but from my research into this it is likely to present particular difficulties: Dingle’s Records has long since disappeared, as, I think, have the master tapes.
Just out of interest, given that the Beeb were so long in allowing the release of this material, are they now glad that they have done so ? Have sales met with expectations ?

🙂I can’t answer that one Hugh, but I have just been browsing on ebay and see that there are three sellers there offering the DVD at more than the Amazon price of £12 – two are at £15, the other is £22 and that one is listed as a book (!).
Talking of which, the book “Jake’s Progress” is also on ebay, for sale by World of Books, who appear to have FOUR copies, price £11.47. It says they have four copies, but I’m not so sure about that.

PS Alternatively you could buy the book on Amazon for £50! They also seem to have two available at about £11.30, inc postage.
I ordered a copy of Jake’s progress at Christmas for my friend. Unfortunately it was “lost in the post”!
Found it on Abe books last week for £8 so ordered it. My friend was really excited when I gave it to him.
Fabulous book.Hi, this is my first post. My DVD arrived today and I’m looking forward to watching tonight. I saw the original programmes back in 81. I first saw Jake on the Braden show and then saw him at a local folk festival in Runcorn in 1979 when I was 20 years old and that was the first time I’d seen him live. Saw him some years later maybe mid to late 80s at Wigan Pier.
I love his music. I have a couple of vinyl albums, greatest hits and the album that accompanied the BBC shows. What a genius, what a brilliant lyricist and storyteller.
