Hi there folks, I`ve been looking for ages for an internet based Jake appreciation site, and stumbled upon this one today, signed up straight away, needless to say!:) I`ve been a fan of Jakes since about 1990 really, but I do remember seeing him on Braben as a child, and even then finding his songs very amusing. My best friend introduced me to his records in 1990, and in the early ninties we went to see him at Nettlebed Folk Club in Berkshire, I think by then he`d either just given up playing clubs `officially`, or was just about to. Got to meet him backstage, and after a short chat, he signed a "Jake Thackray Live" cassette tape for me, bought at the gig, which I treasure. I named my son, born in 1997,after him. Still can`t believe Jake is no longer with us in body, but his spirit and his songs live on. So glad to have found this site!

13 November 2008 at 8:52 pm #5460Hi Blackbird: welcome along. If you keep your eye on the site you’ll see that some of us try to keep the spirit alive by organising evenings performing Jake’s songs and I look forward to meeting you at one sometime.
cheers
Ian

I’m intrigued by your mention of a cassette tape – "Jake Thackray Live". I don’t think I’ve heard of that one. What tracks does it have on it?
Your son should be highly honoured to have been named after Jake! I guess he’s called Jake, not John Philip which is Jake’s "real" name – is young Jake interested in his namesake’s music yet?
Pam
PS Welcome to all our other newbies too, no doubt having arrived here thanks to the BBC2 broadcast of "Jake on the Box". 3000 members 🙂
PPS to Gordon – am now using Firefox to access the website, and most problems seem to have disappeared 😉

Since I’m a bit of a ‘completist’, somewhere in my room I have cassettes of "Lah Di Dah" and "And Songs" that I’ve picked up from eBay or GEMM. I haven’t seen any others mentioned, and I find that a bit surprising. Maybe Blackbird has a cassette of "Live Performance", in which case I’ll be asking him/her for a cover scan (and any other info).
19 November 2008 at 2:16 am #5474I wonder whether the ‘Jake Thackray Live’ cassette might not be a private and rather amateur live recording from the Red Lion folk club: at least one other member of this forum has purchased such a tape from Jake at a gig, and he appears to have sold such items after his recording contract ended and back catalogue was largely deleted. Does the cassette have a proper cover?
21 November 2008 at 1:36 am #5475It is definitely the Red Lion tape. I know because I also bought one at Nettlebed, probably at the same gig!
Do you still frequent the Nettlebed club Blackbird? If so we should meet up one of these days and chew the fat.
