Oooh – I’ve just found this thread. Poetry – my favourite. Can I join in?

Mind you, it does seem to have degenerated into a rather unseemly free-for-all in the last few posts. I’m surprised at you, ladies!

You join us not a moment too soon Sarah – perhaps you can restore a more appopriate tone to the proceedings here – I don’t know how it got out of hand!

Let’s be a poetry thread again – your turn now.

Sorry gals! I had my tongue firmly in my cheek – another of my emoticons [ :^) ] – and I take full responsibility for any disgraceful, disreputable, disappropriate behaviour on these pages in which I am involved. And I know what you mean Sue – my voice was always the loudest at boarding school, so talking after lights-out was always my fault.

Back to the dorm, eh gals? πŸ˜‰

I’m sure Jake would have approved.

                Sue;)

Well, you’re never too young (or too old) to start growing old disgracefully – it’s mostly a matter of being true to who you really are and not to what society expects you to be. You might need a few like-minded people to help you on your way, though. I was lucky enough to find them.
Jake certainly knew what it was about when he wrote The Widow of Brid. B) πŸ˜‰

Well, I’ve finally tracked it down, folks, the poem from which I subconsciously derived the metre and rhyme pattern of ‘Gone A-Googling’, the poetic effusion which heads this thread.

Keith was right of course to point out that I had pinched the ‘If’ gimmick from Kipling’s poem of that name, but the rest came from ‘The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God’, by J. Milton Hayes. It’s taken me weeks of having nothing to go on except the word ‘Khatmandu’ echoing in my head, which wasn’t enough to produce a fruitful search. But eventually somebody gave me the title.

Another friend said it was a parody of ‘McCavity the Mystery Cat’.

So I’m glad to have cleared it up!

Then you can sing it to the tune of ‘The Green Eye of the Yellow God’, a monologue written in 1911 or 1901 with lyrics by J Milton Hayes with music by Cuthbert Clarke. Ah! The wonders of Google – you should try it, Judith
