It’s our custom on these occasions to try to synchronise drinking a toast to Jake with our absent friends. We usually go for 8 pm, but I reckon that will bring us to the middle of the night or early next morning for you. Our evening will be lasting till around 11.30 pm on the Saturday so we’ll try to think of you during that time and hope you might pick up the vibes eventually!
I hope your book launch is going to be as successful as our do promises to be. Have you told us what the book is about?

That’ll be great. It starts at noon (1am your time) so if you think of me before then, I’ll be in me pinny putting out the eats and drinks!

:rolleyes:So you might guess it’s for parents, showing them how to keep their children healthier and happier but before you think ‘There must be a thousand books on that same theme’ – this is for parents worried about the so-called ‘epidemic of obesity’.
Without being too boring, dieting women are known to give birth to kids who get fatter quicker on less than normal food; so the misinformation that it’s all burgers and fast food is a blind and only fractionally part of an overall problem caused by the diet industry. This book blows the myths apart.

Just wanted to let you all know that the Plough is really doing us proud – and Sarah has done a fantastic job! The Box Office person that I booked our tickets through was well impressed with the anticipated response, and very proud of Sarah! Our tickets have come!!! along with the Brochure, and the write up promoting Sept 17th and 18th is great – makes you really want to be there – more of Sarah’s handiwork, I bet!
Looking forward to it already………….

If the new chat facility is up maybe someone could bring a lap-top and ‘broadcast’ the gig to the world…………………just a thought.
At the very least we could use it to synchronise our toasts to Jake and to each other..I think that just to be on the safe side that we should all propose a toast every 60 minutes or so and that we we can all be sure that at sometime we will all have a thoroughly good time if we can actually remember any of it

We only got to Devon by Saturday afternoon, so others will have to give details about Friday evening and Saturday morning (both of which were wonderful, by all accounts). The afternoon guitarists’ session was great fun, and thanks to Keith I know now what I should be doing with the intro to The Jolly Captain. Seeing and playing Jake’s guitar was a fabulous experience (we all decided that The Man had given us permission…). Meeting Sheila was wonderful, and it was good to learn that she is really comfortable with what we are doing to / with Jake’s songs. Malcy did manage to get The Lodger right and, more to the point, his duet with Ian on I Stayed Off Work Today was a triumph. The old hands who were performing just seem to go from strength to strength, and there were some great new kids (and adults) on the block. Jenny and William loved doing Remember Bethlehem and Tortoise (with props), Clare Morgan and her friend Jane did a great Portishead-style On the Shelf, with Malcy on backing. Bertie (the American spaniel, for those who don’t know him) sat obediently on the stage while having Our Dog sung to him. On Again On Again had a real stageful, and the Topica Ladies did us proud again, emerging clad as witches with hats, cats and nude aprons to flash, while Ladies Magic Circle was busked. It was a great event, and thanks are due to all those (Sarah especially) for all the hard work that went into setting it up. I could ramble on for ages, but Jenny is now demanding access to the computer to contact the Topica Ladies. Still, I hope that this gives some inkling of what Saturday evening was like.

IMHO this was the best yet and it’s going to be hard to top – although Phil Neal and I made public our intention to stage a Jakefest in Edinburgh during September 2005.
Projet Brassens were very good, ’nuff said. The Saturday morning session was likewise excellent and the rescued film of a young Jake playing in a smallish room for a group of french folks studying English was a real treat.
The main event was a cracker – the usual format but with Jake’s family and a greater proportion of paying punters in the room so the stakes were a bit higher. I heard many many comments from ‘new’ folks about the quality of the night and how much they enjoyed – and in a major triumph we learned this morning that two elderly ladies had left early in the first half in disgust at the ‘vulgarity’ and smut. Hooray! A hit Sir, a veritable hit!
The ‘new’ performers were excellent.
Speaking personally there was one moment which meant a great deal to me. As usual I performed Tommy Haverley – but this time in the knowledge that Mr and Mrs Haverley were in the audience. Thankfully, despite trembling bladder, I got it right and had a lovely chat with them afterwards.
Before I start to gush, two wholly insincere apologies – to Sarah for importing her into Jake’s Family Tree and to Pam for my reference to her from the stage in connection with breasts of alabaster.
A very good time to be had by all and I Stayed Off Work Today finally got the treatment which it deserves to boot – twice.

What an absolute knockout experience this weekend has been – my humble thanks to everyone, whether they be organisers, singers, or audience!
Epic stuff. Except that the digipic I took of the machine heads on Jake’s guitar didn’t come out.
(for those who didn’ see it, one of the turning bits was an old Greek coin, and another was a bakelite electrical switch!)Damn! I meant to snap those heads too. Hope someone else did, and will upload to Yahoo! in due course.
Just to say the DevonFest was not quite the same without DH – but he was there in spirit. I know ‘cos we bought some of it for Malcy, and I had to take it back till I got it right (it was a Glenmoray, you’ll be pleased to know). And he deserved it!
I hope the plentiful and diverse reports sum up the feeling of how it went. The mystery guests were spectacular, notably Clive’s Remembrance, Clara and Jane, and the Thompson family.
The pictures onstage turned out a bit dark, but I was flashing away, and if anyone is looking for a collection of their good selves immortalised, I probably have one or two suitably expressive moments captured. Just email me directly. The same goes for the Saturday workshop.

Hi there you lot. I’ve just got broadband, and suddenly using this site looks a far more enticing proposition (I’m always in a hurry).
Thanks for coming to Torrington, everyone. A few people know, though most don’t, that my Dad died a week before the event. Being with you lot really cheered me up, and got me through a difficult time. Special thanks to Clive, Sonia and Bertie, who came to Devon early and gave me a lot of moral and practical support.
I thought that Malcy, Ian and Phil did us proud on Saturday evening. Thanks for that, chaps. Also thanks to all the performers (including the Topica Ladies) – I’ve since spoken to several local people who came along on the night not knowing what to expect, and who were hugely impressed by the standard of the performances and commitment and respect the performers brought to Jake’s songs.
Sheila, Tom, the Haverlys, Dr. Colin and Ralph McTell were all delighted with the weekend, and Sheila in particular said that it had proved to her that Jake’s songs could be sung successfully by others. In short, everyone was happy! Ah – except for the two ladies who walked out early on Saturday night complaining of ‘smut’. They were not, as first thought, ‘old ladies’; apparently they are in their forties. It appears that it was ‘The Hole’ that finished them off. This sets a standard for walkouts that Edinburgh will struggle to top. Maybe ‘The Bull’ could be scheduled earlier in the evening next time?
