Tomfoolery

Went to see the Tom Lehrer based show, ‘Tomfoolery’ in Edinburgh last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it and despite (curiously) not having any of his records, recognised several of the songs. (‘Ken Bennet and the Kowloon Honkers’ used to do a fantastic version of ‘Vatican Rag’). Obvious parallels with some of Jake’s material, both troubled Catholics to say the least!
Partly to inject a bit of life into the semi dormant discussion area, Anyone seen it?… Thoughts generally?…

I think if you .. ahem look closely enough.. you’ll find that Tom Lehrer is Jewish.

Not surprising he was troubled as a Catholic, then! (Although young Bobby Zimmerman made the crossover twice at least, from Judaism to Born Again Christian and back.)

Of course he is.
Don’t tell me Jake was Jewish as well??

I also think there is some similarity between Lehrer and Jake, but Jake has the English subtlety.

Strangely enough, just finished listening to the Radio 4 programme on George Brassens (it’s still on their ‘Listen Again’ page, http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml and look for "Georges Brassens: the Man with the Famous Moustache" to have a listen) and as expected, Jake’s version of Brother Gorilla was included, and also when one interviewee was asked who was the English language equivalent to Brassens, up came the name Tom Lehrer…
