Does anyone else recall Jake performing on TISWAS ? My memory has it that he was singing a chorus along the lines of,"When the Phantom Flan Flinger flings flans in your face on a Saturday,Then you know you’re a star,You are,Then you know you’re a star".
I know that doesn’t scan very well when written down like that but ,in his inimitable way,Jake made it work.
      There is,however,a possibility that I drempt it,though I’m fairly sure that I didn’t.

        this is tantalising…

I can’t really offer any useful information, but I suspect the programme involved would more likely have been TICKERTAPE, on which Jake did work (alas all recordings have been destroyed). Nothing in the list of his songs suggests a Phantom Flan Flinger, however, although there is something listed as "Food Song" which has disappeared in the mists of time.

Well, although I wouldn’t be prepared to stake my life on it, I’m fairly sure it was TISWAS. Perhaps Chris Tarrant would know . Anyone know how to get in touch with him? Perhaps one of our 2000 (!) members could apply to go on "…Millionaire" (since there’s no one come forward for Mastermind…)

Coincidentally, Tarrant has just announced that he is to revive TISWAS for a tribute show on ITV next year, and his press release states : "The villainous Phantom Flan Flinger is also due to make an appearance." No mention of Jake, however, and Tarrant says that tapes of more than 350 episodes of the show have been wiped. The email address of Tarrant’s production company – which is appealing for members of the public to submit tapes of the original series, is unimediaman@aol.com

Forgive me for resurrecting this topic here but I seem to have gone "off topic" elsewhere (see "Jake’s Music":Is this one of Jake’s songs?).
Anyway, there’s been a reply to my posting on the "TISWAS" forum and, although the guy couldn’t say whether or not Jake had appeared on the show,he remembered being impressed by him. There’s been over 130 viewings of the post on that site now so something may come out of it:you never know.

Thank goodness, I thought it was only me who remembered this. I too recall Jake Thackray on Tiswas. This was years before I came to appreciate his music and just remember how distinctive this musician was.

Well that’s two of us !
                    Marvellous.
Even if nothing ever comes of it I can rest (reasonably) reassured that it “wasn’t just me !”

He even had a specially written song on the show (and ended up being flanned).

A bit of Googling reveals that not only does Jake’s appearance on TISWAS exist, it was shown at a Kaleidoscope (organisation that specialises in dusting down lost and forgotten TV archives) event 7 years ago!

                          https://missingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/8588/june-2013-kaleidoscope-music-event

The episode was from 28th Feb 1981, and is also referenced here:

This would have been from towards the end of the programme’s run, after Tarrant had left. There’s a bit of chat here that suggests latterday presenter Gordon Astley was a Jake fan, so that may have been the link: https://www.cookdandbombd.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=59996.30

Now, how do we get hold of a copy…

(And… does this qualify this thread for a promotion from the off-topic section to the Jake section?)

                              Brilliant detective work, Mark.
You’ve really made my day (though, obviously, seeing the footage would be immeassurably preferable !).
So few (to the point of zero) other hard core fans have ever imagined Jake was on Tiswas that I really was thinking it was just me (until sbriddon joined in !).
It couldn’t have been announced that he was due on otherwise I would have videoed it (I’m assuming I was “Channel hopping” even to have dropped on it).
Anyway, as I said, thankyou for finding out all that information.
                              Good man.

Yes, it was a coincidence us both musing the same thing at the same time. I just remember Jake getting’pied’ while still playing on as if nothing was wrong. What a trooper.

My pleasure! I do like digging up forgotten bits of trivia like this (you may have noticed).

Certain other members of this forum have good form when it comes to actually excavating such things from the archives, so who knows….
