At last! I’ve worked out how to send a photo, anyway, this is how the bust looks at the moment, Please see my previous post.I am very impressed, Ned! I have to apologise as I don’t visit here all that often at the moment, so I had missed your first posting about this (repeated below here for anyone else who missed it).
I think this is something we should all be backing you on – it’s a fantastic and amazing offer. I don’t know what his family would think; there are others here who are in closer contact with Sheila than me, and I shall alert some of them to this thread. Can I suggest that you could post future updates on this as a continuation of this thread?

Hello this is my first post. I’ve been a fan of Jakes since hearing his records played by my much older cousins back in the 70’s.
I saw a tv program about Jake a while back, and was surprised to learn that there is nothing to commemorate him. As I am a sculptor, I thought I should have a go at creating somthing as a tribute to his genious. So I’ve spent the last couple of months creating a bust that I hope, if there’s enough support, could be cast in bronze and erected at his place of birth or similar relevant site.
How would Jake’s widow and family feel about this idea? What do the rest of the membership think? Should I not give up the day job just yet? I’m struggling to post a picture of the bust.🙂 Hello and thankyou Pam. I was a beginning to think that there was nobody out there, as I’m also working on a life-size statue of Kylie and when I posted a picture of it on her website the forum when crazy within a couple of hours.Anyway It’s always nice to get a reaction to one’s efforts especially when it’s positive.
The first picture I posted was taken about 3 weeks ago, really just to see if there was any interest in the idea, I’m still refining the piece, but there is surprisingly little reference material to work from. I just watch the videos on “youtube” over and over again, then go back to the bust and pull it about some more. When it’s finished I can produce a cold-cast (resin/bronze) version of it at home, but a true foundry bronze is a different matter and much more expensive. I’m really struggling to get pictures to load on this messenger but will keep you up dated with progress, Thanks again,Ned.
That really is starting to look very promising. Keep at it and I’m sure someone, somewhere will contact the right people for funding. It would be a shame for the situation of no real commemoration to continue, although I’m sure Jake would have been happy that so many are still keeping his songs alive.
Hello Dave, and thankyou for your comments, I’m still working on the bust as and when time allows, as I still don’t think I’ve quite caught him, and as I mentioned in a previous post good reference to work from is quite rare.
I’m also in two minds whether to change the polo-neck jumper back to an open neck shirt, as if the piece is ever cast and ends up sited out side the neck hole will fill up with rain water. It could end up as a glorified bird bath :dry: .
Does anyone know if Jakes famly are aware of this idea? As if they didn’t want it to proceed I’d stop straight away, It’s just that the sooner I know one way or the other the better really.

It is difficult – I hate working from photographs without sketches of the subject first, but appreciate the difficulty in this case! (Oil paints, not sculpture).
I think the open-necked shirt is a perfect solution, as Jake seemed to prefer that; as an ex-teacher myself, I can understand the feeling only too well. I spent almost fifteen years teaching fine arts in a school where suits and ties were expected of the male staff (yet anything allowed for the females, strangely enough). This would also, as you say, allow rainwater etc. to drain away naturally and not leave a “tide-mark” around his neck!

Both my inlaws were art teachers now retired, and my wife Julia has her own pet portait business(www.jpetportraits.co.uk). but I work three shifts in a local factory making flavours for crisps. I hate it and would much rather be sculpting or painting(I’m just starting in oils), but it pays the mortgage.
As for contacting Jake’s family. I hoping someone in the group is in touch with them and will make them aware of what I’m doing, Then get in touch via this thread.
I’ll change the collar over the next couple of days, and post another picture when it’s done.

I have to say that I’m becoming increasingly impressed with your work. This is looking really special now.
There are many others on this site much more qualified than I am to relay news of this to the family and to suggest the best site…although somewhere in Swaledale has to be favourite, there are other major places in Jake’s life.Hi Dave, and a very big THANKYOU, It’s starting to feel like it’s nearly finished, It’s funny how you can sit in front of the clay model adding a little bit here and removing a lump there, feeling “this is really coming along” then go watch the video’s again just to check, and all the confidence drains away. It’s only people like yourself who take the time to comment or suggest improvements that let you know you’re going in the right direction.
I’m sure you’ve had the same thing with painting, returning to one after a couple of days away and spotting that somthing doesn’t look right. Unless you’re an abstract painer that is….. 😉
I would love to hear from more members, as to whether they think this is a good idea. I see the thread has had lots of viewings but not many comments. Come on don’t be shy.
For a change, here’s a couple of pictures of the Kylie statue I was working on up until I started Jake. I’ve made a mould from the model, and will be attempting to cast her in the next couple of weeks.

Hi everyone, I’m still working on the bust, but as I there haven’t been any suggestions other than Dave’s. I can only assume that there is no real interest in the project. It’s been an interesting project, to try and create somthing with very limited reference material. I’m not sure it’s worth the time and expense of making a mould from the piece. Anyway here’s how it looks at the moment.
Ned, I am still very impressed with your work, and I really don’t understand why there’s been so little response. I’m sure we can’t be the only ones visiting here!
I agree with Dave, it would be wonderful to have this lasting memorial to our hero.

Well, I’ve been looking at it and reading but I’m in no position to do anything about it.
I think it’s stunning I really do :unsure:The interest is there if people remember to access this site! I am sure that a lot of us,like me, only pop by to check gigs!
Anyway, this is good stuff, and I admit to a twinge of jealousy as I have been trying to capture Jake on canvas. My only drawback (and it’s no real problem as nobody will see the end product). Is that I am not very good at faces.Thanks Pam for the reminder, hopefully the finished bust will end in somewhere relevant such as Monmouth.
