Sorry I haven’t posted on this thread before. (I used to be on here as Ringo, but….internet problems…well!)
I have to agree with all that the opening lines of On Again have to be the best in the English language.
My all-time favourite song, however, has to be The Brigadier, as it could have been written in or about most of the villages and towns when I was a youngster (the 1950s and 60s). I think it has masterful use of the tones and rhythms inherent in Jake’s style of guitar playing and is so well written that even mediocre player/singers like myself sound as though they know what they are doing!For me, it’s got to be Country Bus! Not just because I’m a transport enthusiast who remembers it from the T.V. some 30 (+?) years ago with Pennine Motors vehicles in the upper Ribble Valley but because it’s so beautifully crafted. The use of adjectives is a delight and typically Jake …and it’s a classic example of a poem that you can visulalize in your head as he sings it. The idea of the bus turning up with daffodils in its gaiters and pussy-willow in its hair – well, if you’ve ever driven a classic bus through country lanes as I have, they will clip daffodils (or anything else) out of verges when passing other vehicles and take low hanging leaves and twigs with them. You can bet that Jake had seen buses (and passengers) such as these, inspiring him to write.
