just saw the doc on BBC4; have to admit ive never heard of the guy before, being up myself in indie as i am, but i absolutely loved it. Reminded me of a cross between John Cooper Clarke and Ray Davies. Loved the songs, loved the stories. Good guitarist too.

I’d heard someone at a folk club doing ‘On Again On Again’, but until I happened across this evening’s documentary I had no idea of Thackray’s talent.

John Cooper Clarke, yes! Also made me think of Leon Rosselson a little, in style of lyrics and delivery.

Have to go and find some CDs…

as yet The Remembrance isn’t on any available cd. It was out on vinyl on an album called Jake Thackray and Songs which can often be found on eBay or Netsounds.

We’d like to remedy this if we can

Ah right, thanks for the info. And thank you also for the efforts that have obviously gone into getting the programmes shown; this stuff deserves to be so much more widely known (as plainly you have known for a while ;).

Wonderful, thought I had missed the two programmes as picking Shona up from the airport, but they were repeated about 11:30, so we stayed up ’till 2am watching them (shame I had to be in at work 8:30 today!! Never mind)
Laughed out loud at ‘The Bull’ appearing so early, (remembering Jake saying, ‘I keep trying to get the BBC to play this one, I quite like it, I quite like it!’) Great choice of songs to play, ‘Bull’ and ‘Remembrance’ would still mean a lot today even to those who’ve never heard him before. Enjoyed seeing the old photo’s and clips. Question: Where was the later 1981 concert footage from? Incidentally, I have never seen an audience look more bemused by what they were hearing, but Jake plughed on manfully!

At the time I did not have a beard (too young darlings) but I did have long hair.

I have the programme for the weekend somewhere in the attic, but as I recall Jake did three 45 minute spots. As well as Sister Josephine, The Kiss and The Hair of the Widow of Brid, whcih were shown on BBC4, he also did
The Bantam Cock, The Bull and The Remembrance and probably a couple of others which I forget now.

Are you sure the ’81 footage was Cambridge? When the 1st of it came on I thought Cambridge too, but a section of the same footage a bit later had a footnote saying it was some date in September ’81 (it did specify, I just don’t remember which one) – Cambridge, as far as I know, has always been the last weekend of July each year, although I’m happy to be corrected on all counts.

the September date was the BBC broadcast date as part of their annual review of the Festival. That programme showed Sister Jo, The Kiss, The Bantam Cock and The Hair of the Widow of Brid. It remains in the BBC archive under the name "Folk 3" – see the media list at http://www.jakethackray.com/content/view/135/40/

Can you believe it’s almost twelve months since this appeared on B.B.C.4 ? Where does the time go (cue song!)? Like everything else "Jake",it’s etched on the memory and,fortunately,on video.Let’s hope for more of the same,eventually.
