Caught the programmes on BBC4 by accident and just wanted to say how sad i was to hear of Jake’s passing.
I loved his songs in the 60s, watching tv as a 10/11 yr old budding ‘folk singer’ and spent a sublime evening somewhere in Telford in the late 70s at one of his gigs. Such a lovely, supremely talented man who seemed to be so self deprecating for no obvious reason. I hope he’s happy wherever he is now.That would have been Madeley Court or Stirchley – I was at both and still live in Telford – do you ?

no i live in west brom but at the time i think i may have been living in birkenhead. i cant remember which of those venues it was – just remember it being a thoroughly entertaining evening.

Now in my mid-forties my only recollection of Jake was his weekly TV Cameo appearances in the early 70’s … I was too young to appreciate him then, but I do remember that he made me laugh and my Dad used to say, "Turn him off he’s bloody rubbish "… (He wasn’t a big Fan of JT). I had largely forgotten all about him and I couldn’t have given the titles of one of his songs if I was asked …. and then. ….. I came home from work late one night a couple of weeks ago, and flicking idly through the channels on TV I happened upon the BBC4 Programme/Documentary of Jake….. I listened and watched him sing a few songs from his repertoire and I found myself saying.. "My God, this man is just a Genius.. he is absoloutely fantastic!!". It went on into the early hours but I was transfixed, and after the programmes end I knew I had to pursue this man and his talent. 3 quick bids on E-Bay and I had managed to purchase three CD’S …’The Very Best of, Lah-Di-Dah and Live Performance (X2 CD).
I just want to say that I have listened to them continuously since, and I am floored by his voice/style/talent …. his songs are sad/funny/poignant/irreverant and beautiful all at the same time.
Anyone reading this will already be nodding knowingly and saying to themselves, .."Yes, we know all that"…but I didn’t know anything about him, and now I have heard and loved his music I just find it hard to explain how much pleasure his work has brought to me for an overall outlay of less than ¬£30 for 4 CD’S.
I just wish I had appreciated him when he was alive, but death sometimes bestows something indefinably greater… and now he is no longer around I suppose that is what I have found.
He is a great bloke I reckon.. and what is more I now know what to get my Dad this Christmas !!!!
