I watched the “Best British Sitcom” programme last night on BBC2. Rather upset that The Vicar of Dibley managed to make the Top 10 but Steptoe and Son, Till Death, Rising Damp, Hancock’s Half-Hour and many more gems did not. Not surprised to see that 28 of the Top 30 shows were from the BBC.

[color=#0000FF]I’m afraid I nodded off before the end but I’m told my favourite was on – Hyacinth Bucket! I also loved Rising Damp, Open All Hours and Men Behaving Badly. They missed Game On, another of my favourites.

Well, these things are voted on by current viewers, and by self-selection they presumably are skewed towards the lower end of many spectrums/spectra and probably have a tendency to give greater weight to what’s most recent and therefore uppermost in their memories. Similar concerns can be voiced about LoTR as best book (or was it favourite?), Churchill (was it?) greatest Briton, any number of questionable ‘best songs’ included and left out, ditto greatest performers.
The playing field is far from level, as are many of the players.
My vote must include American shows and goes to Soap, Fawlty Towers, Barney Miller, Only Fools and Horses, Men Behaving Badly, Ab Fab, Steptoe, Phil Silvers for sheer quantity and exuberance, Till Death, Taxi. Plus all the other good ones that I’ve forgotten. But then I hardly watch TV any more so I’m biased too; maybe I’d agree with the placing of The Vicar’s collection of hammy stereotypes if I watched it more.
Once again, more than you wanted to know.
no one seems to have mentioned my favourite – ‘i didn’t know you cared’ – uncle mort (self identification) and carter brandon – being read every morning on radio seven at the moment.

Not sitcoms but I love Drop the Dead Donkey and the Brittas Empire. I can remember Hot Metal vaguely. When you look back at Open All Hours it really was so well written and what good actors they all are. When I think of the Darling Buds of May I just wonder what David Jason was thinking when he took the part! :blink:
