Good Day,

As this is my first ever message, anywhere on anything, I beg your forgiveness if this is in the wrong place. I have a question… is one allowed to ‘perform’ Jake’s songs e.g. down at our local tavern – and would I have to beg anyone’s permission or pay tithes anywhere? Help would be much appreciated.

Hi Don, welcome along. There are a number of us here who are quite happy to play Jake’s songs anywhere that’ll let us – indeed if you let us know where your local is we may well turn up one night and join you.

You don’t need to seek consent. Assuming that you are in the UK your hostelry ought to have a PRS licence and possibly something from the council, but that’s their lookout not yours.

Jake’s songs need to be sung and kept alive. Kudos to you for doing so

Thanks muchly for the info: so good to know that the sally forth and yodel wouldn’t be tied up with yet more Red tape! Having reached this ripe (ready for -er – pluckin’?) old age and casting about for something demanding to do, I felt I might revisit some of the Master’s songs that I used to peddle around Germany in the early Eighties; once I’ve got some kit together… We live in South Wales, UK, 20 miles from Carmarthen and 10 miles from Lampeter ( University Town ) on the highest mountain bar one around here, three miles from the nearest pub; all Jake fans hugely welcome.

It is a nice idea isn’t it? It’s looking to be my New Year’s Resolution; for many reasons. The hamlet here is much smaller than Alice Springs, outback there are six dwellings and the dogs outnumber the residents – er – humans but less exotically we live in the bowels of Wales, UK. The ‘Good Day’ was a curt telephone answer used by an Officer I knew in the Army,( who, it happened, looked spookily like one Jake Thackray ) so I would ( and still do , on occasion)try to emulate him with a brief ‘Good Day..Chester’ down the mouthpiece, I know, little things…See my message to Ian for a better idea of where we are in the sun drenched interior; if any fans are ever this way!

Hmm, Malcy’s notion of Guerilla jakeing has a certain appeal. Long ago we had the idea of Extreme Jakeing but that came to naught.

I actually quite like the idea of impromptu performances of any sort, and of Jake songs in particular. A sort of Urban(e) Thackerism. I remember walking down Princes Street in Edinburgh during the festival in 1983 with a bunch of musician friends – we had just been busking the military tattoo queue (a great money maker – that queue moves s-l-o-w-l-y) a guy ran out of a pub and said the act he booked failed to show and could we do about half an hour – off we went in – had a great gig and one of the songs we did was Jolly Captain. We got paid and they gave us a couple of pints – it was all over in half an hour. Urban Thackerism!
