(Sorry, created a new thread by accident.)
Following RayT’s lead, I Googled for Derek, found his website and e-mailed him. He e-mailed me back, asking me to phone him so he could sing me the song!
Derek says the original song was written by John Wells (of Private Eye "Dear Bill" Letters and TVs "Rory Bremner With Wells and Fortune" fame) and recorded by Jeremy Taylor ("Ag Pleez Deddy") as "Pizzouf". It’s not on any of the three CDs on Jeremy’s site, but while I was there I noticed that one of them includes a song "adapted from ‘Marinette’".
Anyway, Derek Brimstone heard Jeremy’s song and wanted to sing it, but couldn’t remember the lyrics, so he wrote his own version in his own dog-French. He sang it for me, but there’s one line he can’t remember. He suggested I make something up for it, but I’m not up to the task.
Here’s my dog-French version of Derek’s dog-French version (Jeremy has a degree in French).

My first reaction in reading the original post was that the song was one of Jeremy’s (His wife is French and I think he now lives there) but I couldn’t actually remember ever hearing him sing it. I could, however, remember Derek doing it.
Although I’ve not seen either of them for years, its typical of Derek to insist in singing it over the phone to you.

The non-linked eBay auction includes a track listing, which shows that this song is on Very Good Time RUB005. That’s fortunate because I can’t find track listings anywhere else on the web and I don’t subscribe to Muze.
Derek released more than one album on the Rubber label – don’t know how many, but there are two currently available on http://www.gemm.com, and more cheaply on http://www.netsoundsmusic.com: RUB005 (the eBay one) and Shuffleboat River Farewell (RUB017).
That should see off the few remaining casual readers, Ray!
