Jake on vinyl

I read some time ago that The Beatles mixed their first few albums in mono
and that stereo was an afterthought … it was also mentioned that rather
than folding the stereo into mono, 2 different mixes were done …

With this in mind (given the similar time-frame and indeed the same studio
being used), I tracked down a mono copy of “Last will and testament” on
Ebay for a superb £5 🙂

It seems that only Jake’s first 2 albums were issued in mono

I haven’t done a forensic A/B comparison but some of “Last will and testament”
is subtly different to the stereo mix on the boxset … the honking sounds
on Country Bus in particular are quieter in mono, sounding like they were recorded
from the other side of the room

Pleased with my discovery I chanced across a promo copy of the “Lah-di-dah” 7″, also
on Ebay for a lucky £4 … I assume it is mono as well … I don’t have the standard
issue to compare (I assume they have the same mix) but I was delighted to discover
that the promo has a completely different vocal take to the stereo version 🙂

As I have said elsewhere I am VERY new to Jake’s music so apologies
if these discussions have been done to death elsewhere …

Fellow obsessives will be interested to hear that the version of
Lah-di-dah on the promo is different to the one on the mono LP …

I thought the version of LDD on the single was a different vocal …
I realise it’s actually a completely different take, backing included

Good vinyl hunting, Danny, and well spotted regarding the differences between the different versions. I’ve never had the chance to compare mono and stereo albums. When I finally picked up a copy of the single version of Lah-Di-Dah I was surprised to discover the difference from the album version. It is a shame that it isn’t available digitally. I have no doubt that the aim was to make Jake sound more obviously commercial and radio-friendly.
