Having just bought a record deck, I’ve been going through my old LP’s and found the above gem. It’s great as it’s a recording of part of a show recorded back in 1980 so there’s some of Jake’s chat between the songs. Is this one to enter on the discography – or is it aldeady there, having been picked up on my hearing re lyrics, I dare not assume! Its on Dingles records DIN 314

        Hello Alistair,

You’re right, this LP doesn’t appear in the discography on the Project site, but it is, of course, known about. For what it is worth I think that it is the best LP Jake made – a fantastic snapshot of the man at work in the setting in which he was most comfortable. The ‘plastic encore’ monologue and ‘The Bull’ are the two highlights for me.

        best wishes

Yes, the discography section is a little light on LPs at the moment. Most of them are missing, I’m afraid. We were rephotographing the sleeves and retranscribing the track lists, sleeve notes and other text some months ago, but then other things got in the way (don’t they always). Coincidentally I uploaded pics of Jake’s Progress front and back just last Thursday, so something is happening, just not that visibly at the moment.

We’ll get onto it again pretty soon, bit by bit. Thanks for the nudge.

That aside, & Songs seems to be most people’s favourite album, probably followed by Live Performance, and rightly so to my mind for the authenticity of the Jake exerience, unconstrained by a studio environment and unsullied by orchestrated accompaniments.

Re mishearing lyrics, even the extreme pedant that I am got caught in a very early post when I quoted from Sister Josephine from memory and got it wrong – Malcy picked me up, for which I am eternally . . . bitter. 😔

In an attempt to allay any bitterness, may I confess a huge Jake lyric mishearing of my own ? For years I had been performing "The Ballad of Billy Kershaw" from a tape someone gave me and I was singing the lyric

"Many a poor, distracted Catholic, rating Billy, over-lured…"

only to eventually read the real lyric on Edmund’s site

"Many a poor, distracted Catholic, rating Billy over Lourdes…".

Yes, I know they sound the same but it’s my only excuse for not spotting the Catholic joke. D’oh !
