Apparently an episode of Meet the Richardsons on Dave features a short clip from Jake Thackray and Songs. Does anyone have more details?
14 March 2020 at 11:15 pm #6969I have tracked the programme down: Meet the Richards Series 1 episode 3, which was broadcast a couple of times yesterday on Dave. In this spoof documentary Jon Richardson talks about wanting to do a one-man show about Jake, as he is a hero, and talks about his sad demise. A short clip of Jake singing Personal Column on Jake Thackray and Songs is then shown.
The theme song of the programme (and series?) is a great, upbeat cover version of Lah Di Dah by Hull indie band Turismo. Their version is worth checking out on Spotify.
3 April 2020 at 11:26 pm #6976Episode 6 was on last night and was full of references to Jake and clips of him performing On Again! On Again! The programme ends poignantly and amusingly with Jake’s recording of Lah Di Dah. I strongly recommend any fan of Jake’s to watch. 8 April 2020 at 4:52 pm #6984We’ve also been watching the series and my wife and I exchange knowing glances when Jake is mentioned (my wife being one of the nuns who was featured on Jake On The Box at the Edinburgh Fest, along with the sadly missed Terry Grant…). One thing that faintly disappointed was that recently Jon R was intoning the words to “On Again” and praising Jake’s writing and inclusion of Latin puns… only then to repeat the old trope of “Old Jake didn’t have much respect for women” on national telly. Shame that, even if for only comic effect, such an apparantly cerebral comedian should allow the first experience some people would have had of Jake, to be associated with misogeny.

https://youtu.be/lC5YqFasKiY21 April 2020 at 10:09 pm #6990Yes, it worked, but I think I wished it hadn’t. Good to know there’s a Thackray fan out there, pity he doesn’t understand On again! On again! though and “End Title music performed by Jack Thackray”??
Was it supposed to be funny?
21 April 2020 at 11:46 pm #6991I found it funny, and I think he is a genuine fan. As Malcy says, it is a shame he chose to go for the predictable line about misogyny for the sake of a joke.
3 May 2020 at 5:22 am #6998OY OY… What’s all this about then? I’ve just got back-on-the-Thack (after a looong break) by learning “Girl in the Window”…. and Jake seems to have a mainstream reference again! OK, I’ve not seen the misogyny episode yet, but I think this exposure can not be a bad thing!!! And the theme tune!!
