Well fan societies tend to put a postive spin on their numbers. šæ Let’s be honest, Jake fans are so endanged we should have an enclosure at Durrells.
As for the BBC, they will do what you like provided you throw enough money at them š How much does their material cost per broadcast minute? :whistle:
I doubt if the BBC fans they will ever put out a DVD of Jake off their own bat because (as you have indicated) the audience isn’t there to make the project viable. I like this state of affairs as much as you do by the way, but there it is. I’d like a Jake BBC DVD, I’d also like world peace.
Mr. Thackray is not a popular man. Word of mouth isn’t working. A quick look at Amazon.co.uk will show the official EMI CD’s now being sold very cheaply. This is not altruism to us lot:They just can’t shift the stock. I shudder to think of the Beyonce/Thackray ratio out there…
I would personally like to see the BBC post some decent quality videos up on their site of people like Jake. It would cost very little to them to do, and might even make a couple of quid for the Beeb as a sideline. At the moment we are slaves to the whims of the people who post on YouTube with all the attendant copyright grief.

ā¦ couldn’t that dream produce large scale action and optimism become justified, thenĀ ? …Quality is always worth promoting. I hang around musicians and music listeners a lot in my line of work. I promote Jake Thackray to each person I meet, and I alway get a very positive response. Whether this amounts to increased sales or will eventually inspire large scale action to be fans of this man I couldn’t say; free will being what it is and all that.
Voltaire dealt with optimism in 1762, so did Mr. Thackray in one or two numbers of his. It’s a slippery little philosophy to say the least. Jake also had a couple of things to say about the types who promote large scale action (The Bull, anyone?).
People have other priorities nowadays in this instant gratification world, and music as a whole has lost the reputation it once enjoyed even 20 years back. The problems of a few fans wanting more material of an English chansonnier don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.
I suppose what I’m trying to say is lets be happy what we’ve got. At least the majority of the stuff is still available as well as great unexpected bonuses like the brilliant DVD provided by this place.
Going back to the Beeb, if a DVD is wanted that much perhaps one of the smaller labels could be persuaded to licence the material and put it out. Blind enthusiasm won’t cut it though, they’ll want to see numbers before they lift a finger.
I’ll quit this topic now before I become the forum’s very own slough of despond. What I will say to the original topic though is that the Live at the Unicorn DVD is singularly brilliant, you need it, you’ll love it, buy it in droves, or I’ll send the boys around. In fact, buy two so that you can watch it in stereo.
Send one to Stephen Fry, he promotes anyone who loves the English Language. Now if anyone can spread the word about Jake… :whistle:

Well, I’m trying to do my bit on the southern side of the Channel ā¦ and just the same as you Ā«Ā I alway get a very positive responseĀ Ā». The thing is so many people have never heard of Jake ā¦ or taken time to LISTEN to his songsĀ !

The only thing needed to turn this wise piece of advice into large scale action is obviousĀ : just convince the Beeb Ā«Ā loudspeakĀ Ā» itĀ !…I wonder if we might take better advantage of the opportunities offered by social media – Facebook, blogs, Pinterest, Tumblr and especially Twitter – these are great multipliers when looking to get out your message. I love the suggestion of approaching Stephen Fry – do you know one “Tweet” from Stephen will reach 4,552,246 people instantly!!!! This website already offers Twitter and Facebook links – I am not on Facebook – but it should be fairly easy to set up a petition on Facebook for the BBC to release Jake material – all it would require would be a casual click from your “friends” – and their friends and before you know it you will have a lot more names on your side than you originally thought. As a little experiment I just created a Pinterest page – in about 15 minutes – here it is – http://pinterest.com/richardshields/jake-thackray/ – I only have a handful of followers – but if one of them likes this and forwards it to one of their friends …you get the idea.

I’m afraid that, as the info on the homepage states, there are no copies available via this site.
At the risk of repeating myself (see separate posting elsewhere) next Saturday , being the 30th September is the 28th anniversary of the recording of “Live At The Unicorn” and I was wondering if as many of us as possible could sit down and watch it again.
Just a thought.
