joost "Jake on the Box"

wonder why Joost has removed their excellent repeat of the BBC4 prog Jake on the Box? Have asked them frequently but get no reply, loads of other people have read my message but no one else has complained about it. Is it the rotten BBC forbidding them to use its stuff like on Youtube. It was the highlight of my day and I feel terrible without seeing and hearing live stuff from the archives. Is there anything we can do to bring it back, perhaps if we all send queries about it they might realise it is worth returning it

I reply to myself. I saw Jake a few times as I saw Ralph McTell in the folk world. Jake was a singing poet and I loved him as I loved a writing poet in the 60’s. And my ex-lover John Warburton directed ‘Jake On the Box’, as I see John Etheridge being interviewed, who I knew well, when I lived in London. Circles, so many circles of life and Jake knew and sang about the stories of circles so well.

432 guests visiting the website, as Martin Carthy on ‘Jake On the Box’ gives authority to the fact that Jake was a good guitar player, playing with nylon strings. These suffering Roman Catholics seem to be crucified into being great creative artists. My mother was ex-communicated and thus never passed on any sinful repressed creativity to me – alas! But then I am alive and Jake is sadly dead.

Hi everyone, i am watching ‘jake on the box’ at present (by accident i must admit…) but i love what i see/hear. i want to get some of his music but there is quite alot available, can anyone please advise me of a good place to start? is there a definitive best of?

Buy yourself one then buy it for friends and spread the word!

Also ‘The Very Best of Jake Thackray’ has some of the classics…

Then, when you’re completely hooked you could invest in ‘Jake In a Box’ – a 4CD set of his EMI recordings.

Fabulous ! I was just browsing through the tv menu, and saw the words ‘Jake On The Box’. I hadn’t heard of Jake for many years – he was one of my mums faves, and as a kid, didn’t ‘get it’ at the time. Threw the ol’ Sky+ into record anyway. Then it hit me – this man was a genius !
Since the prog, have picked up 3 different CDs form various places. Anyone know if the Beeb are repeating the programme ?, reason I ask – I’ve got the last 40 minutes only, missed the first 20 :(. Can anyone help ?
Had a quick look too re the list of things in the BBC archices… would be wonderful if the Beeb could air them, or make them available.

On eBay at present there are two rare Jake items:

the song book, with words, melody lines and guitar chords

the fabulous and now long deleted live LP Jake Thackray and Songs

I think it may have been ME who bought the recently eBay’ed "and songs". I have just transferred it to CDR for my own pleasure and will be playing it to death over Christmas; it is surely the best live album I have heard for many a year .. and it was recorded just up the road from where I live, here in Milton Keynes.

Buying it was a bit traumatic… I saw it on eBay late the night before the auction finished, and tried to buy it the next morning – but my internet went down for half the day, grrrr. When it came back the auction was ended without a sale. I emailed the guy and asked if he could re-advertise it as a "buy it now"… and HE DID!!! Long story cut short, but I paid for it and it arrived just two days later (yesterday), and I am so glad it did. And I’m very grateful to the seller for his re-advertising it so promptly. It’s a shame it hasn’t officially come out on CD, I would love to have a proper digital transfer of it (oh, AND all the project CDs that I missed out on… are they all unavailable now, does anyone know?).

One day maybe we will see a DVD of his work at the BBC, they obviously still have quite a bit in their archive, if the recent documentary is anything to go by.

I’m glad the live album went to a good home. Like you, I have done a transfer onto CDR, but it is a crying shame that this wonderful album is the only official vinyl release not to make it to CD.
