OK, just on the offchance that you are serious, it’s a pin.

And I’ve just spent ages researching on the web so I could make an informed ‘guess’ rather than have my bluff called by Keith ! πŸ˜›

Well, I make no excuses for not being able to interpret the icon correctly, since I’m in good company with Pam. Perhaps she and I have our visual understanding impaired by overuse of emoticons.

I have to admit, it really does look like an acorn!
Judith, have you not read the whole of ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves’, the chapter about emoticons? πŸ˜‰

Well, yes, but as far as I am concerned my computer is more of a toy than a tool, and I shall play if I want to. I daresay I shall grow out of it one day, and I am resisting all enticements to download 2000 new emoticons free from the web!

Goodness! I have just noticed. In the bottom right-hand corner of the window which opens when I hit Send/Receive in Outlook Express, there is a different icon for a pin. I have never paid it mind, but for the first time just now I hit on it, and lo! and behold, it changed to the ‘acorn’ icon Gordon is using for Sticky Topics. Nothing seemed to happen, however, and I wonder what it’s there for. I’m sure someone can tell me.

Dear all

What do you think the people who offer these things get in return? Some are genuine freebies but often the payback is information about you, your computer and your surfing because what you download is spyware – that is, it contains a program that reports back to someone whatever it has been programmed to report back. This may be passwords, identities, which software you have installed on your machine, which websites you visit, and so on.

If you’re ever tempted to take a freebie download from a source you’re not 100% certain about, find out the download’s name (if you can’t, stop right there) and enter it into Google. If you get no results, stop right there. If you get too many results add “spyware OR virus OR worm OR trojan” (without the quotes) to your query and see if it is a known problem. Try that now with the word “emoticons” if you like.

Even then download only what you really need. And maybe download a free spyware (or adware or other not very nice things called, collectively, malware) detector/remover (after checking it in Google of course). And consider investing in a firewall (there are reasonable free ones, especially BlackICE – consult Google again) that will block all outgoing transmissions not initiated or expressly authorised by you.

This isn’t a bad place to start if you want to know more: cexx siteGood links at the bottom of that page, too.

Good luck.

I see that the outline for the site is now a rather lurid puce colour.Nice.B)

I now find that the back button does not seem to work either. Ah well such is progress.

By the way how many members are TOGS. I think that I am to young to be a TOG but am too old to be a TIG. Thinking about it thatr probably qualifies me as a TOG

Y’know that photo at the top of the new “easy” template – it’s the one on the new CD – has someone pinched Jake’s ciggie and pint?

Never mind about editing posts – I couldn’t even read them earlier!!

I kept getting the message:

Web site not responding – Error 502 – Broken or busy server.

Is it getting too popular? πŸ™

I am most definitely a TOG – I titter away from 7.30am – 9.15am.
I just love Xavier Mousetrap’s horoscope and those two who make the films for discerning gentlemen, Anita Bush and her husband.
But mostly the wonderful names of the listeners who write in.
Being a true TOG I can never remember them!

Essential info from Keith as usual.

I had a lot of trouble with my Norton Personal Firewall when it was first installed and had to keep disabling it as I couldn’t access any websites. It improved after I had a ‘little man’ in to tweak it but I’d decided not to bother with this years subscription.
Keith just changed my mind!

I suppose if I ask what TOGs and TIGs are, I risk a sarky reply from Keith. I have looked in the acronym source on the web and the only appropriate TOG was ‘Terry’s Old Geezers’. But there was no TIG to match it. ‘Terry’s Infant Geezers’? ‘Terry’s Idiot Geezers’? Or how about ‘Topica’s Inveterate Grumblers’?

Well, wonder of wonders, I now seem to have the edit link on ALL my postings on this site. If the rest of you haven’t got them yet, I shall assume I’m getting special treatment, either because Gordon loves me, or because he’s fed up with hearing from me.
Whatever … thanks Gordon πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

P.S. ‘Edit’ doesn’t seem to include ‘Delete’. I tried to delete this because I’d cocked up the boxes, so I could start again, but I couldn’t. Ah well! can’t have everything.

A TYG is a Terry’s Young Geezer – really don’t think we can put Mr Morgan into that category – he’s a daddy, after all!
