I am having a strangely schizophrenic experience at the moment, which is both ‘on’ and ‘off’ topic. My current bedtime reading is a Catherine Cookson type of novel by Josephine Cox, set in Blackburn. It has introduced a character called Jake Thackerey. He is a crook and a cad and readers are not invited to love him, so there is no real confusion, but there is a funny jolt every time his name appears on the page.
I don’t think I have ever encountered in my reading a character with a name which has such intense associations for me. As the book was copyrighted in 1989, it is possible the author knew of Jake and borrowed the name.
