Hail and Well Met Again, Thackster Chums both old and new !
It’s time to wage war again on our old enemy – Jake’s Lyrics – as we proudly announce the opening of the 2022 Scarborough JakeFest Baggsy List !
This year, as you will have seen in Paul Thompson’s main announcement, there will be two performances at the upcoming Scarborough JakeFest on 22nd October :
– An evening, ticketed performance featuring Jake Thackray songs performed by professional and semi-pro players, which will be organised separately :
and…
– An afternoon all-comers’ Open Mike session, open to singers of all standards and Jake repertoires, to which YOU are invited to perform ! There will be seasoned Thackray musicians there who will be able to play guitar for you, and a glory* of bass players (*a “glory” is the correct collective noun for a gathering of bass players) who can accompany you should you require these services. All YOU have to do, Dear Thackster, is remember the words… and sing them !We have no idea how many people will be inspired to take the stage in the 2-and-a-half hours of the afternoon session, so we shall initially be asking you to submit a list of five Jake Thackray songs, in the order you would prefer to baggsy them, and we will aim to allocate you a set of three songs each. If space permits, I will mail you back early September to ask if you would like a 4th song too… but, if there is a clamour for a taste of the limelight and the thrill of the greasepaint, it might only be the 2 songs, who knows?
However : what we do know, is that there is only one Sister Josephine, only one Jolly Captain, only one Bantam Cock, etc : so if you choose any of those more well-loved ditties, you may be jostling amongst 8 other performers who also want to sing Sister Josephine… so, depending on the size of your Jake repertoire, you may find someone else gets the more popular numbers. Maybe, if you only know one, popular Jake song, you might consider expanding your repertoire in the upcoming 4 months…
But we will try our best, and be as fair as we can, to give you as many of the songs as you ask for, even if we have to do a later round of song-swapping…
Still interested ? Good ! Then simply mail me, Malcy, at jakefest@hotmail.com, listing up to five Jake songs that you can do, and specifying order of preference. If you would like any guitar or bass accompaniment, please add that too You have from now till the end of June to submit your baggsy list, and then I will begin to sift your baggsied songs and give you a set list that will delight you and, indeed, your audience at Poor Old Bloody Scarborough!
Get choosing, get mailing, get practicing, and see you there!
Malcy
