if you like jake a lot (who doesnt?)i came across a cd by this chap ADRIAN TEENBEAT who plays in london regularly and is often compared favourably to jake.i have seen him a few times and he is a real undiscoverd gem, playing his heart away to half empty bars.hes obviously a big jake fan but as a style of his own.hes supporting something called ‘the trachberg family slideshow’ who sound very strange this saturday 10th july at the buffalo bar islington.according to his website http://www.sickhappyidle.com he has made 100 albums (surely a typing error??).anyway check out the free downloads (i recommend ‘hard on’ pure jake…)
7 July 2004 at 5:16 pm #3942Had a listen. Sounded more like Morrissey with a humour graft to me (the lyrics sort-of reflect the biog extract below), but then I’m an old fart anyway. Any other opinions?
The band name is Teenbeat, from Birkenhead. Adrian R Shaw (born in Barnsley) heads the band and also performs (and maybe records; couldn’t spend too long surfing) solo. The last part of his brief biog says:
"2ooo no longer believes he is alive
no longer believes in his past as some kind of story
depersonalises but in an affirmative way
no longer believes in love
no longer believes in family
tries to live creatively as possible
thinks a lot, wonders a lot
has no aims, he no longer wants anything
sits down and decomposes quietly"He name-checks Jake as an influence, along with Dylan, Beatles, Elvis, Michael Holiday, Jim Reeves and others. The recommended track ‘Hard On’ (yes, the rude meaning) draws more on the country influences.

7 July 2004 at 8:06 pm #3944I was going to follow my previous posting with a few Jim Reeves pastiche titles such as
(Most of all) I Love You Because (You’re Fit)
or
Welcome To My Thighs
but as Gentleman Jim actually performed
Blue Side of Lonesome
But You Love Me, Daddy
Blue Boy
I Won’t Come In While He’s There
and
Yonder Comes a Sucker…I’ll get me coat.
22 July 2004 at 6:30 am #3950I’m too old and too infatuated to even contemplate ‘another Jake’ even if he were a dead ringer.
Actually, from the quote above the guys sounds like a self-indulgent twerp but maybe someone else writes his publicity and he’s really a nice guy – but he’s still not Jake.
