Does anyone know more of the details about it? When it is going to be transmitted and who will be involved in making it happen. I think Graham Pass is the Director, but who else will be involved?

Details are sketchy, however the programme is in production and my understanding is that it is scheduled for Spring 2006. A camera was at the Jakefest in Edinburgh last month although what, if anything, will be used hasn’t been decided

The situation with the VL-S documentary tribute programme is that Associated-Rediffusion is contracted to deliver it on 25 November to BBC 4, where it will receive its first showing, presumably in the New Year. Obviously it is hoped that the clamour from you guys and others will get it repeated pretty soon afterwards on BBC 2. As well as covering the Edinburgh Jakefest, camera crews have been to Swaledale, Leeds and Monmouth and there are by now roughly 25 hours of interviews and other background in the can. Just how Victor intends to reduce all this to its essence to produce a 1-hour show – given that presumably at least 50% of the show will be archive footage of Jake himself (of which some totally new stuff, including at least one previously unheard song, has emerged), only he knows. But at least everything is progressing apace; and as soon as a transmission date is fixed, rest assured we’ll all be among the first to know!

Quite interesting what you say about the BBC4 production on JT. Have you been involved in the filming so far?
I loved JT’s wry songs and wit. I’m not an obsessive fan, but think he deserves a celebration of his life’s work to be seen on TV.
Shame there is no one else currently in the UK like him on the music scene, although I see there is a guy touring round singing his songs. Just listening to Folkwaves on Radio Derby and they announces some tour dates.

Just to save you any confusion, Susan: no, ScarTam and Aliasmacalias are not one and the same. Only one quarter of me is Scottish – I think old Alias would claim to be more thoroughbred. And yes, I have been working on the Victor Lewis-Smith programme as Programme Consultant. Incidentally, if anyone has been to a show by this chap who is going around singing Jake’s songs (Michael Wilson, perhaps?), it would be interesting if you could post an opinion. And while we’re at it, has anyone seen Hilary James and Simon Mayor’s Jake show? What’s that like?

The sig quote is not from Thackray but has been with me for a long time and is now a habit. Aliasmacalias dates from early in my internet usage when I used multiple pseudonyms for reasons which I can’t entirely remember but which seemed like a good idea at the time. It is by way of an oblique tribute to the late Hamish Henderson (Google him).

Hooray! I find myself quite frequently having to enlighten people who haven’t heard of him. I have in the past been known to run together his ‘D-Day Dodgers’ with Jake’s ‘The Remembrance’.
