Just out of hospital and I find that Fake Thackray are performing soon in Stockton Heath and, later on, in Lymm. Wonderful.
I also have to report that, last Sunday, we had Mark Dowding at our acoustic club for the night. As part of his set, he sang and played “Sister Josephine” absolutely brilliantly.
After his set, our organiser, Geoff asked him to do an encore of “…that rabbiting song you do, just for Dave!” This turned out to be an impromptu performance of “On Again, On Again”!
I have tremendous respect for anyone who even attempts this in public, but Mark, unrehearsed, played and sang right through with no hesitation, deviation…etc. A stunning end to an incredible night’s entertainment.B)
Just home from a wonderful evening at Stockton Heath Methodist Church Hall – a venue, I’m sure Jake would have loved to play, even with the audience from tonight! This was described by someone (who shall remain nameless as I don’t like embarrassing good performers, John) as all those who voted LibDem…in Cheshire!
We were treated to a variety of Jake’s wonderful songs, one of which was completely new to me and some of which I have never heard performed live before. All were masterfully sung and played, allowing for the odd “hiccup” true to Jake’s style.
Paul Thomson was superb as a sort of Master of Ceremonies/main singer – presumably as the “local lad” who set it all up. He was followed by a magical set by Jamie McCoan; he may be a “poncey Southerner”, his words not mine, but he can deliver Jake’s songs with genuine Northern feeling. That is intended as a compliment, Jamie. Next we had Peter Dolley, singer of some unusual (even for Jake) songs. He had the audience spellbound for quite some time.
After the interval, Paul performed some more classics and the asked John Watterson, a genuine Yorkshireman, to round off the evening. This he did in fantastic style. I have never heard “Billy Kershaw” delivered almost as a challenge or threat, but, by God, it worked!
In true Jake Thackray style it was the last song, “but now we’ll do one more”. The group rendition of “The Bull” had the audience leaving the Hall with tears in laughter in most cases.
A superb night.
Please go to see them whenever you can.
:cheer:Well, well … on that evening I was just back on the other bank of the Channel after a very jolly ciderfest at Powerstock in Dorset. What a shame … I’d have loved to manage to spend a little more time in Britain, drive up there, see ( and hear ! ) Jamie again, meet Paul ( at last !) and his other friends … and share the atmosphere of that gig in Warrington with you all !
Maybe another time, then. By the way, you mentioned another evening with the Fake Thackrays later on in Lymn, Dave … WHEN ?I’m sure if you contact Paul he can give you the full details as I can’t remember at the moment, nor can I remember where he put the original information! Paul, of course, lives in Lymm, so I assume the gig is another of his projects. I am hoping that more information will come soon on this site.
