I have just discovered a singer/songwriter who will be appreciated by most Jake fans. His name is Dave Goulder and he has been writing and performing for a good few years now. I had heard of him through his “January Man” – a song, usually performed by solo voice, which is incredibly well-written and powerful.
Last night he visited our club for the night and I heard some of his “other” songs! I found myself thinking of some of Mr Thackray’s songs when he sang of the newboy engineer who forgot to put all the levers back after playing at being the engine driver. The train started itself off and ended up in the local chip shop! Worthy of Jake, I’m sure.
He also has a song about a train inspector (note a tendency here?) who was trying to have an easy night, but ended up with trains rattling past through the night.
Like Jake, Dave is an amazing virtuoso on a nylon-strung guitar, but with the additional, quirky mastery of the Jew’s Harp – a real rarity these days!
All-in-all, I heartily recommend a listen if you get the chance.
