Hi Paul and thanks for your reply, I didn’t pay much attention to the few wooden cross graves and I now rather suspect that Jake’s is one of these. The information I got from the local council was “Yes he is indeed laid to rest in the church yard just a few metres from Saint John Kemble near the preaching cross.This is at the front door side of the church to the east of the door.” so when I next go down there I will do a more thorough search and take a pic and if this site allows it I will post it. I hadn’t heard of Fake Thackray but will take a look for it, thanks for the lead.

further to our short discussion I have just returned from a camping holiday in Herefordshire and did take time to look around the churchyard in Welsh Newton for Jake’s grave. Sadly the church is little used these days and much of the gravestones and graveyard are overgrown badly but we did a thorough search around the newer graves and couldn’t find Jake. So we went into Monmouth to the cemetery there but no officials on site so went to the town hall and eventually found that in fact despite the name Welsh Newton is in Herefordshire and not Wales so as the two regimes are not linked we reached a dead end. They have given me an e mail address though within Hereford council so I will try that avenue and will update this once I get anything further. Jake really was a one off and a singer I associate with my youth. There are no substitutes for him even now. All the best for 2019 and enjoy Bingley it is a super town.

JamieMany thanks for your reply Mark, Monmouth is a really nice town in a gorgeous part of the country, I canoed down part of the river Wye earlier this year a bit further north near Hereford but similar countryside. Jake is in a fitting spot if that is where he is at rest. One more thing I recalled which made us laugh was the line Jake used regularly after second encores “haven’t you got any homes to go to.” A great character that I will never ever forget.
