Brassens covered some Trenet tunes for the radio which eventually got released on archival reissues. In interviews, he used to praise Trenet as the godfather of the 50’s French music scene, especially an inspiration when he was young and the reason he began to write songs. He had so much respect for the man that one night as he was performing “les trompettes de la renommée” in Bobino and Trenet was in the audience, he skipped the quite homophobic verse of the song (Trenet was gay).
