I was put off going to see the show myself by the negative comment previously and went to see other shows instead. There is still a question mark over the amplifier sound, so maybe they need to address that if they are to get this show just right next time.
Some more reviews just in on Jake Thackray show at the Edinburgh Fringe shed a clearer picture…

An excellent piece which not only showcased Jake’s songs superbly, but also painted an authentic portrait of the man himself. A very interesting way of bringing the songs of this largely forgotten genius to audiences. If you have heard of Thackray before, you will know what to expect; if not, you are in for an unusual treat. In either case, highly recommended.Neil Foster 4 days ago
Very entertaining – we all enjoyed the show which was a clever mix of Jake’s songs linked with an interesting narrative. Was especially fond of the “Our Dog” song!Howard Becke 4 days ago

This was disappointing, largely on technical grounds — it was too realistic. It accurately depicted the sound system deficiencies of too many live venues, where the performer sings too closely into the microphone and the consequent proximity effect puts too much bass into the sound. As a result, the words of the songs were difficult to understand. The problem was made even worse by the attempts to reproduce Jake Thackray’s singing style, which is a little bass-heavy. The show would have been less realistic but much more effective if the sound system had simply been used as a visual stage prop with no effect on the sound — the unamplified sound of the spoken parts between the songs was just fine.Christine Mason1 day ago
