Well, you know you want to…..
I am pleased to announce a new Jakefest. It will be fest at which the new DVD, ‘Jake Thackray and Songs’ from the BBC TV series will be launched and available on sale!
The venue is the Queen’s Royal Hotel, New Brighton, Wallasey, Merseyside. Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th October 2014. The weekend will consist of an informal Friday evening of song and laughter followed by a Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening concert, with hopefully a few more treats including a sneaky preview of some of the DVD. All profits for this very reasonable £8 fee will go to Wirral Autistic Society.

This Fest will be the launch event for the Jake Thackray And Songs DVD, and there will be paying members of the public there, so the evening concert will be hosted by those players who play Jake’s material on a regular basis, including our own John Watterson, also known as Fake Thackray, who has been performing Jake’s material professionally up and down the country to great acclaim. There will also be a folk-session-style sing-a-round night for all comers on the Friday where a turn will be passed around the room, and if no-one’s yet done any particular Jake song, it’s yours !
Early doors for the process yet, but we want to get you all on board at the start. Please let me know if you will be there! Depending on numbers, we hope you will get two to three songs each.
Once we know which of you are plan to attend, we will begin baggsying the songs !

It would be great to see lots of people at the Jakefest. Ticket sales are really hotting up and the fest venue hotel are having lots of enquiries and bookings. It’s only £8 and the proceeds go to a worthy local charity.

Friday night is an informal folk club style night, not restricted to Jake songs. Saturday afternoon is a concert with quite a few performers booked already, more welcome.

http://www.sheridanswallasey.co.uk (2 train stops)Further to Phil’s most recent postings, I went to check out the venue on Thursday lunchtime last (4/9) and, for what it’s worth, I reckon we’re in for a tasty weekend. Quite apart from any other consideration they sell proper beer at not too silly prices (& they’re approved by CAMRA !).
It’s a fair few years since I’d been to New Brighton. I saw Robin Williamson (ex Incredible String Band) at one folk venue there some time ago and Peter Skellern at the Floral Pavillion (which is but a short walk away from the Queen’s) on another occasion but I don’t know why I don’t go more often. It’s lovely. (Admittedly it was a gloriously sunny day which always helps to create a good impression).
Anyway, I for one, am really looking forward to it. I’ve not been to a “Jakefest” previously. Does anyone specialize in doing the “talking bits” ?It will be good to see you and meet you there, Hugh. It does promise to be a great weekend and, as with other Jakefests, offers a chance to play the tourist a little.
There can be some between-songs chat, but none of us have Jake’s skill, alas. The new DVD, however, has some superb talking bits.
Tickets are going steadily at the moment. I’m expecting a bit of a rush in the last week so get ’em in soon!
Did you know there is a new development at New Brighton. It has some nice restaurants and bars as well as the Queen’s Royal Hotel. There’s a marine lake, fish and chip cafe’s, a Napoleonic fort, lighthouse, mini-golf, theatre, amusement arcade, 10-pin bowling, home-made ice cream cafe, pirate ship, pubs, lovely sea views. http://www.marinepoint.co.uk

Meanwhile, for those who, like me, have not managed to catch Phil’s interview live, the link he has given works perfectly well and they’ll find what they are looking for about 1h 48′ inside the programme .Paul Millington has kindly sent in these photos of Jake taken at in the early 80s at The Black Horse Folk Club, West Kirby, only a few miles from New Brighton. I saw him there in the late 80s.

Getting very excited about the forthcoming weekend, and it’ll be great to see old friends again. Can we raise a glass or two to the friends who are no longer with us at some point during the weekend? I can think of Bertie, Clive and Frankie.
