Excitement mounts as my “Jakefest” tickets have arrived; ( thanks, Phil. I must buy you a pint in the local later on, by the way )
Now the forum is back, good to report it was a very enjoyable and successful fest on Merseyside. As one of only two of us who sang to an accompaniment, I have an idea though it may be a minority request at the moment. If there were recordings of guitar accompaniments for some songs, it would enable non-players to practice, and maybe even use them karaoke style at parties, bar-mitzvahs etc, as well as sing at fests with live backing. Performing as part of a group adds a dimension I reckon.
Jamie has kindly agreed to record Jumble Sale. Initial other candidates I’d nominate would be The Cactus, The Kiss, Billy Kershaw, Blacksmith, On Again On Again, Sr Josephine and Lah di Dah. Hopefully this could lead to a library to sit alongside the tabs and lyrics on this site. Every player has a certain style, so duplicates would be welcome to give a choice.
Then there’ll be no excuses for knowing the words but not perforning them . . .
News just in – £460.30 will be going to the Wirral Autistic Society.
Thanks to all those who performed and paid for their own tickets, the lovely audience and Sound-man Steve who gave up his time and resources for free and to http://www.reckless-elbow.co.uk who gave their p.a. equipment for free.As the site’s been “off line” for a while this is the first chance I’ve had to say what a tasty experience the New Brighton Jakefest proved to be. No doubt I’ll go on (again, on again !) elsewhere about the dvd (good work ,everyone , by the way !) but, just to reiterate, my mate and I had a really enjoyable time and it was good to see nearly all the performers really getting into the spirit of the whole thing and forgetting (at least) some of the words (“Don’t clap !”).
Also great to, at long last, put some faces to names.
Thanks to all involved.Finally managed to meet up with Rick from Wirral Autistic Society to give him the cheque for £460.30, over a coffee at the scene of the crime!
He brought along two articles from a colleague; one from ‘She’ magazine and another from what I believe was a newspaper periodical advertising arts in Merseyside, specifically a JT ‘tour’ of Merseyside. There are no direct indications as to the year of publication on either article although I can tell you that the former has adverts on the back for goods in shillings and old pence, and the latter advertises a John Williams concert with prices of ‘Front 100p, Centre 80p, Rear 60p, Balcony: 80p’. This presumably puts them either side of 15th February 1971.
Intriguing. And an especially poignant last line in the She magazine article.
Rick also gave me two vinyl albums, Bantam Cock and Jake’s Progress which I will put on ebay shortly, profits going to Wirral Autistic Society. Once again many thanks to all who came to the Jakefest including all the performers who gave their services for free and bought their own tickets to the event.Looking at the days and dates, I’d say the tour was from 1968. The article says he’s 30 which would make it 1969 though, as you say, the new money refs on the back suggest a couple of years later – I suspect the age reference is not that precise!
Also, I may have too much time on my hands!

Off to see Fascinating Aida tonight at Salford Lowry: should I report back ? (I quite like them…..)Fascinating and insightful article. The reference to just one LP suggests first half of 1969, and doubtless it would be possible to pin down precise date, given reference to My Pipe My Boots My Lord being the song of the week for Braden’s Week.
Yes please, tell us about Fascinating Aida – have a great time! (I’m thinking of getting tickets for when they come to Brum in February)
