Well done, Glenn. A top rendition with all the required spirit, I thought ! You’d fit in nicely amongst the rest of us at the next Fest, easy.

Thanks Malcy, sounds like a plan. I’d love to come to a Jakefest. I’ll keep an eye out and hopefully be free.

This really is a fantastic site, so much info etc. The guitar tabs are amazing, it’s not often you find songs so well transcribed. Great stuff!

Glad you like my rendition of Brother Gorilla, cheers.

          Keep up the great work
          Glenn

            Hi Glenn and Malcy
I fully agree with both of you and, as a fervent admirer of the « musical brothers » Georges and Jake were, am glad to know that Jake’s superb English version of Le Gorille goes on being beautifully sung to British audiences.
Having, like Glenn, missed the recent Jakefest, I too am looking forward to reading rhe date and location of the next one and, in the meantime, would appreciate getting some idea of the atmosphere at the Hobbit through a video on this excellent site ! …

              Hello Michel and Glenn

Sorry you missed the Jakefest – keep watching this site, whenever any of the Jake performing people (not just men!) are performing there’s usually a notice about it here.

Meantime there are some tasters on Youtube – try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Avs5_5kCyos&feature=channel and look at the others from jakethackrayfan there, filmed at various Jakefests. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them! They might also lead you to some actual footage of Jake, the man himself, performing.

As you may have realised, this site has been recently revamped, and some pages, like the links to videos and photos, have yet to be updated. Be patient, they’ll be worth waiting for!

                Thanks Pam

I’ve been searching through YouTube for Jake, and have found some decent covers along the way, but it’s wonderful to see the “Jakefest” videos. I really must get to the next one. Thanks for the link.

I’m looking forward to working out more covers myself. The Girl In The Window, The Cactus & It Was Only A Gypsy are likely targets at the moment. I’m in the process of buying a decent nylon acoustic specially for Jake’s songs, instead of using the steel string that I use for my own songs. I played On Again On Again with a friend singing the other day, that went down well :cheer:

Yes, it’s not just men performing Jake’s songs, and I know plenty of the “frailer sex” – his words, not mine! – who love his songs.

                All the best
                Glenn

« Frailer sex – Jake’s words, not mine!»: Well said Glenn, you are visibly a careful man who lives in awe ( just like myself, by the way !) of a resurgence of the behaviour described by Jake in The Ladies Basic Freedoms Polka  ! Now who knows what a new wave of « the Kensington branch » could be up to ?…
To Jane: Let me tell you how grateful I am for the tip you have given us in your post. I so far suspected that Jake ( and Georges ) could inspire brilliant performances and bring tremendous fun to both sexes and all generations. After watching Glenn’s and (thanks to you!) « Jakethackrayfan »’s videos I know it for sure !

                      Hi Michel

I’m buying another guitar tomorrow, nylon electro-acoustic (quite a nice one) especially to play Jake’s song on. I’m keen to get the right sound (and I don’t think it does his style justice) on a steel strung “axe”.

I remember Jake being on tele when I was growing up, but have only been listening to him seriously (obsessively) for the past year. I’m like a kid in a sweet shop, so many great songs to learn – all delightfully challenging and interesting. I live in Scarborough, so Widow of Brid has got to be one of the next I suss out.

I thought I’d better highlight the “Jake’s words, not mine” bit. He was more than capable of getting himself into politically sticky situation with his mastery of cutting witty comments aimed at most of society, and I certainly didn’t want to be crucified on his behalf!

All the very best to you – and thanks again for your kind comments about Brother Gorilla. I sang it again last night, and most of the people there turned out to be Jake fans!

                      Cheers
                      Glenn

                        Hi Glen

Nice rendition of Brother Gorilla. Re. guitars: you will not be the first to buy a nylon-strung guitar specifically to play Jake’s songs. I’m glad that you have liked the material on YouTube: it’s a great way to open up Jake’s songs to a wider audience.

                        Best wishes
                        Paul 🙂

Hello all and thanks for your kind reply to my recent note.
Well Glenn, the story of your « Jakefanship » is largely similar to mine! Having lost sight of Jake’s career after admiring one of his songs on a TV programme around the end of the sixties, I was put back on the right track in May last year.
Let me say here how indebted I am for this happy outcome to Jean-Pierre Gabilan, an English grammar French specialist who happens to be one of the keenest admirers of Jake on my side of the Channel! JPG is also a fine performer of songs by Brassens and some of his continental related talents, like Ricet Barrier, Henri Tachan, Maurice Fanon, Michel Bühler for instance … and he can be seen on You Tube through the following link: jppggaabb . I am sure watching him can be warmly recommended to every member of this site ( tell me what you think when you have done so )!
Another common point between you and me Glenn, is the fact that we both live near the sea. I can see you are a near neighbour of John Conolly, whose Fiddlers’ Green and Punch and Judy Man are among my favourite songs and whom I had the pleasure to meet when he performed at the Fo’c’sle Folk Club in Southampton at the beginning of the year.
For my part I live a couple of miles from the town where Sister Josephine’s favourite drink is made … which, by the way, has led me to try my hand at writing a French version of this delightful song.
                            All the best,
                            Michel

Hi all on this thread (and all in general really).

Yes, I’m getting my moneys worth out of the new guitar. I’ve got Sister Josephine, On Again On Again and Only A Gypsy sorted (and learnt all the lyrics which was a challenge in itself) in 3 days.

I’ll be back up at Loftus next Thusday and I imagine Ian will post another video, I’ll give On Again On Again a shot. I sang up at Middlebrough on Tuesday and the room was ringing with a chorus of Brother Gorilla.

Bring on the next Jakefest. Can’t wait!!

Here’s another of my attempts at one of Jake’s fantastic songs. Sister Josephine this time:

I’m playing at Rotherham on the 25th Oct. If anyone can make it I’ll pop a couple of JT songs in the set?

Hope you like this one anyway.

Well done, Glenn. Another good rendition and the nylon-strung guitar is a good choice. :o)

Did you say you have a gig coming up soon ? What a coincidence ! I am playing (for the 7th consecutive year) a gig at the West Midlands’ prestigious
