My thanks to all the performers last night and, of course to those who came to watch and listen. It was a lovely surprise to see Pam again as well. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to hear (and play) Brassens material, to be challenged by Goun’s interpretations of Brassens and also to hear some of Michel Ameline’s French translations of Jake’s songs.
I also enjoyed sampling Michel’s Normandy cider afterwards but that’s another story altogether….
Thanks to all: it was a great pleasure and I look forward to the next time

It was great to be there Ian! Shame there weren’t more in the audience, but good to see some new people enjoying everything on offer.
It really was a good evening – some familiar faces, who just seem to get better and better with unique interpretations that I’m sure Jake would have approved of. New songs too – Alan Franks was so funny!
And the Brassens material really made the evening. Goun was incredible, and so often I was reminded of Jake himself with his facial expressions, it was uncanny. Goun was wearing a baseball cap and dancing on the stage, which wasn’t quite Jake’s style really… Django isn’t really to my taste, sadly, but Goun is clearly a brilliant performer and musician. I recognised quite a few of the songs from the LPs and CDs I have of GB; trying to keep up with the language was, well, challenging!
The three French performers, Goun, Didier and Michel have such perfect English it really puts me to shame. Wonderful to meet Michel in person, having “met” here on the forum – and what a change to hear Jake translated into French! What a tribute as well!
Didn’t get any cider though…………..
but did have a great time. Thanks, Ian, Terry, Keith, and all performers!

A great night indeed, and now there is one less item on my “things to do before I shuffle off” list! Thanks to the Lemsip and Rum I was advised to take befor going on, well, as I am sure was noticable by verse 2 of the Bull, I could barely stand! I think my avoidance of any additional cider might have been fate lending a hand to my survival intincts!!

What a great evening ! Let me first say how grateful I am to Terry and Juliet for so kindly putting up Goun, Didier and me.
Then, meeting you I had been in touch with on the forum, Pam and Ian, was such a friendly experience !
Like you, Pam, I was impressed by the number of excellent performers on stage and among them I discovered in Ian such a worthy continuator of the task Jake had brilliantly begun with « Brother Gorilla », « Over to Isobel » and « Isabella »!
I didn’t know about the Lemsip and Rum, Slybynight, but I can assure you it didn’t affect your first class performance and cider wouldn’t have been a problem. I loved your duet with Lorraine although Terry has kept insisting, since his own performance on the previous night … that he is a matchless Kentish nurse !
An official competition will have to be organized next time …It’s been a couple of weeks now, but I thought I too ought to add my appreciation of that wonderful evening at Welling. Everyone who performed was excellent. How you managed to put it all together at such a low price is beyond me. Even the food was unbelievably cheap!
The event made me realise that I really needed to expand my Jake Thackray collection (from two LPs and two compilation CDs), so I lost no time in ordering the double-CD of “live Performance”. The original LP is one of the two I had, and it is so welcome to see the balance of the concert now made available.
I had more difficulty in getting hold of the all-important “Jake In A Box” set, and after putting in a speculative order at Esprit (suspecting that the set was deleted), I saw it advertised with a reasonable “Buy It Now” price on eBay and snapped it up. Yes… you’ve guessed it… Esprit came through and I now have two copies! :unsure:
Still, that’s better than none… :blink:

I have also seen it (Jake in a Box) recently at a reduced price in the HMV shop in Birmingham (around £19 I think)
For those who are content with a digital download, Amazon has the full Jake in a Box for a bargain £7.99.

Is the Jake in a box mentioned in your recent posts an audio version of the BBC 2 broadcast of 3 Nov 08, or something different ? And in that case what would the contents be ?

MichelIt is not an audio version of the BBC recording. It is a retrospective of his studio albums, singles, songs from an unreleased album, and outtakes. There’s a short Wikipedia article, with full track listing and details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_in_a_Box

The Jake in a box cd set has just about everything I’ve ever heard anywhere of Jake, and more! except the Innes book of records version of On Again On Again which is the best version IMO and is on u tube.

For those who have not managed to attend ( and those who feel like getting back into the fine atmosphere of the event for a while ) the http://www.georgesbrassens.fr/ website is well worth a couple of clicks. What is to be found there is that Didier has managed to get a few echoes out of his tape-recorder and decided to share them with the surfing admirers of Jake and Georges. Unfortunately he has encountered technical problems that prevent us from hearing a bit of Jamie’s performance again, but perhaps some more material could be shared through the JT Website as well …
I would also like to relay Didier’s SOS for pictures. I had absentmindedly left my camera home ( let it be said in my defence that I’d had to think ot taking my guitar … and two things at a time, as you know … ), but I am sure other people have been more clear-headed !
So, please: help the French ! …Hello Michel

You’ll see her fine photos, get a feel of the jolly atmosphere at the Welling event and also find a lot more to learn about GB. And JT !
