To return to the unsavoury episode that is my beloved father, someone once told me it was obvious where I got my sense of humour from. Yes, that’s right, it’s all from a joke book my dad found when he was rooting through Lenny Henry’s dustbins.
He brought it home for us to eat but I decided to try reading it instead. We ate the cookery book he found instead, I expect it tasted much the same but the pages looked more appetising.
Anyway, every time I say something witty and/or spontaneous it all comes from hours of painful research and practice. I’m not funny at all by the way, I just pretend to be to make people laugh.
I do "delight in words". But I’m a terrible speller so I sometimes delight in worms instead. I am often bored at work but hope any other Performance Analysts on here will symapthise.

As for adding superfluous letters within words, you can’t beat the Irish. If you motor around Ireland, don’t ask for directions unless you’re happy being laughed at; use a map instead. If you want to pronounce any word in Irish gaelic just drop a random third or so of the letters (especially the aitches) and have a stab at what’s left. EG Maigh Eo is Mayo (county, not low fat), bean sídhe is approx. banshee, fleadh is approx. fla, breitheamh is approx. breeh’n.
Which has almost nothing to do with this Brentism: "Avoid employing unlucky people – throw half of the pile of CVs in the bin without reading them".

I’d never seen the Topica list before, but just now I went to have a look. The first thread that caught my eye was:

This conjured up a rather strange image for me. Now I’m trying to decide who has the longer legs.

Given the posters and content, I have thought a few times that the natural home for this chat is The Steamie. While it’s nicely off-topic here, it’s more permanent than the ephemeral nature of recent posts deserves, and is likely to surprise a lot of new members visiting the thread expecting a nice welcome or some helpful advice.
It’s also a bit too ephemeral and quirky to generate hundreds of Topica e-mails for each quip, police or no.

I made the point a few days ago (25/1/05) that it would be nice if others introduced themselves. Quietness ensued.

Good point well made. There are about 100 more people registered than when i joined a month ago, and thousands more visitors "and still rising". The only helpful advice they’ll get from this thread is not to overdose on lemsip.
As one who has been to all but one of the Project gatherings I have the luxury of knowing most of the the regular posters on this site. As I write I notice that there are now nearly 600 members on this site but few actually post.
Of those we have met as a family I can say that there is not a bad one amongst them and we have had some very memorable evenings in the company of those who but for our love of Jake we have nothing in common with.
I welcome Keiwits rather different slant on life and hope to get a chance to meet some of those who lurk at the next big do. I am unable to attend the Knutsford do which is a shame as I am certain that It will be a blast.
p.s. what has happened to the picture section?
Yes, well, when I kicked off this thread I had hoped that it would afford new members an opportunity to say hello and maybe a few words about themselves. The best laid schemes, however, gang oft agley.

You’ve taunted me too long! Yes, I am one your despised lurker.
I am not sure if I am typical, but I joined up some months ago looking for the lyric of a song Jake Thackray sang at two gigs I went, to but with Ian’s help it turned out not to be written by him! – Job’s Worth. See the threads if you’re interested.
Since then I have been a regular visitor to the site but I have to admit that I did not realise I was lurking. I now feel terribly shabby and worthless, but honestly I had nothing of value to add to you eloquent and experienced boarders.
If it’s a profile of my sad type you want – I am an unashamed 55 year old engineer Рmarried for with two grown up kids. For the past two years. I have been working in Denmark managing a Product Development team designing coffee machines.
In addition to my professional activities here we have been trying to form the Odense Headquarters of GOM International – Grump Old Men International.
The Jake Thackray website has been one of my electronic haunts over the past two years and if it wasn’t for you I probably wouldn’t have known about Sister Josephine Kicks the Habit. I’m planning to be there, hopefully in Leeds. Yes РI will be lurking there too!

Hallo all,
Since lurkers appear to be disapproved of on this forum (though I can’t think why –don’t you find it flattering when people lurk inquisitively? I know I would!) I decided to introduce myself. I’m a relatively young fan of Jake’s and first discovered him about a year ago when I heard Lah-di-Dah, an utterly brilliant and subversive song and still my favourite, hotly pursued by Sister Josephine and Ulysses. Since I am also a huge fan of Jacques Brel, I was able to hear the chansonnier influence on Jake’s work at once. I have been cogitating on where Jake fits in the English folk (sort-of) tradition and musing on the possibility of writing an article on him for my online magazine, which, among other things, examines some of the quirkier areas of English culture. All of this helps to explain why I joined the site last week, although to be frank I’ve been too busy to do much lurking since then (with the exception of enjoying the witty posts on this forum). So that’s me, then.
