      I would add that I think the reason it’s hard to hear what he’s singing at that point is that he’s dropped his voice down to a semi-mumble; because he is conscious, as a good Catholic, that he’s singing a particularly naughty/blasphemous line.

        Sorry for the late reply.

        There is a Noel Coward song, “That Is The End of the News” that has a line about shingles meeting in the middle. Not from the seventies obviously but it could well have been performed on TV around that time as there was a bit of a Coward revival going on (e.g. the revue “Cowardy Custard”). Jake is often compared to Coward, of course.

          Loved the event in Leeds last night.
          I’ve been looking forward to this book for some time and greedily devoured the first chapter on the bus home.
          Really looking forward to the Scarborough event too.
