Hello I have just received this from Debbie in Monmouth. She still seems keen on the idea but as usual there is no money.
Thanks for getting back to me Debbie, I’ll forward this to the fan club in the hope that there’s still enough enthusiasm for the bust idea that some one will offer with help towards funding etc.

We can’t use this on the gateway scheme. However, I think it is a great idea and am currently trying to get some people interested in taking it forward.
Our problem is that we currently don’t have any spare capacity both in resources and finances so I would have to form a group and then get them to go for funding.

Hello again, No response from Monmouth yet, but I guess it’s something that has to be discussed at a town council meeting. So I imagine it may be a week or two before I hear anything. Thankyou for your suggestions, If nothing comes of the Monmouth enquiry, I shall be following them up.

Jake was from a different era. The sort of talent that he had with words and the guitar, just don’t seem to interest people as much now, and it’s a real shame.
Thankyou for suggestion about Cardiff, not sure I’d sculpt Gorges Bressans, as it’s been difficult trying to get anywhere with the Jake sculpt. I’m also trying to get the BBC interested in a bust of John peel, and I’ve a small model of Kylie to make.
I’ll keep the you all posted as to progress.

I’ve been in touch with Monmouth Town Council, and I’m pleased to say that there is some interest in the idea of the bust being cast in Bronze for the town. One lady in particular is very keen it should happen. I’m currently gathering quotes from a few art foundries for the council to consider. I will be spending the day at the Zahra foundry in Braintree next friday learning how a bronze is made and discussing ways I may be able to reduce the cost of what is a very labour intensive process. Keep your fingers crossed, Please.

Thankyou, glad you like it. I can’t help thinking that before long Jake is going to be completly forgotten. I’m 50 next birthday, probably a bit younger than most of Jakes fans, but even I recognise the man had an incredible talent and a sence of being particularly English, I would love to see him properly remembered hence the bust. I think he represents a time that has past.
Todays mainstream music is all gangsta rappers and get rich quick, the quality, skill and imagination has gone. If we can get this bust cast in Bronze and erected somewhere the general public could see it, hopefully it would generate a fresh interest in Jakes work, and keep it alive. I have the mould, but no contacts in “the North” so any help promoting this idea would be gratefully received.
Thanks again, nedHello haven’t been on the site for ages, but just to let anyone interested know that the bust of Jake has been cast and offered to our local comprehensive school to go in the art department to help students with their portrait work. None of them will know who he is, unfortunately. I’ll post photo’s in the next day or two. I tried Leeds council to see if they were interested in having a bust any where “up North” ( I’m in Suffolk), but there was no response. Any ideas gratefully recieved.
Hi Phil, Thanks for the encouragement. I have managed to contact one member of his family who is all for the idea. He gave me contact details of two other family members who haven’t responded. It’s clear from speaking to the first member, that they are not a very close family. I’ve also written to Leeds civic trust and city council, neither of which has replied.
I’m in the process of making a mould from the piece, so that I can make a cold cast (Bronze/resin) version. This will look like a true bronze at a fraction of the cost. but gives any potential customers a much better idea of what the finished piece would look like.
To be honest, with all the government spending cuts going on at the moment, I don’t think there’s any chance of a bronze of Jake appearing any time soon.
All the best, ned.Just bought Jake’s “In a box” cd set, luckily there are some good photo’s of him in the accompanying leaflet, which will allow me to improve some of the “grey areas” on the bust. I should be able to start making the mould tomorrow.
I’ve recieved a quote from the foundry, and they’ve also said I can do the wax which will help to keep costs down.
I’ve contacted Leeds Civic trust, but the man who deals with this kind of thing a Dr Grady is on holiday until Monday.
Does anyone know if Jake’s family are aware of this project? I really need to hear from them, that they are ok with it.

Hi Dave, Thankyou for your very kind comments. I’m not really sure how any of the members can really help to make the dream a reality. Other than contact the local press in Monmouth or Leeds, to tell them about the project, and guage the feeling in the area. I suspect it will be that the money would be better spent elsewhere, as usual.
However, If I do the moulding at home, then take the mould to Limehouse (I have a good relationship, with an art foundry there) where they say I can do the wax. This would greatly reduce the cost of producing the Bronze. I can even deliver the finished piece.
I’ll contact the foundry today for a quote, and also leeds Civic Trust, to try and get the ball rolling.
I’ll keep the group posted as to developements. Thanks again.
All the best, nedTHANKYOU Pam, Nobby, Busking Bob, and Cynthia. It’s good to know you’re behind the project. I really need to hear from a member of Jake’s family that they have no objections to what I’m doing. As Jake didn’t die that long ago, I still have to be sensitve to his family’s wishes.
I should stress that I’m not doing this for financial reasons. I’m a genuine fan of Jake’s. When I tell people I’m working on a bust of Jake Thackray, I’m amazed at how many people don’t remember or have never heard of him, but show them a clip on “youtube” and it always raises a smile.
You talented musicians still performing his songs wont be around forever. Then he really could be forgotten. I believe the bust just might make a few more people google “Jake Thackray” and see what they’ve been missing, before rap, hiphop and “X” factor manufactured “talent” overwhelm the country.
I have been advised to approach Leeds Civic Trust with regard to sourcing funding for the project, as I know money is very tight everywhere at the moment. If they are unable to help, maybe Monmouth town council.

All the best, ned.Hi everyone, I’m still working on the bust, but as I there haven’t been any suggestions other than Dave’s. I can only assume that there is no real interest in the project. It’s been an interesting project, to try and create somthing with very limited reference material. I’m not sure it’s worth the time and expense of making a mould from the piece. Anyway here’s how it looks at the moment.
Hi Dave, and a very big THANKYOU, It’s starting to feel like it’s nearly finished, It’s funny how you can sit in front of the clay model adding a little bit here and removing a lump there, feeling “this is really coming along” then go watch the video’s again just to check, and all the confidence drains away. It’s only people like yourself who take the time to comment or suggest improvements that let you know you’re going in the right direction.
I’m sure you’ve had the same thing with painting, returning to one after a couple of days away and spotting that somthing doesn’t look right. Unless you’re an abstract painer that is….. 😉
I would love to hear from more members, as to whether they think this is a good idea. I see the thread has had lots of viewings but not many comments. Come on don’t be shy.
For a change, here’s a couple of pictures of the Kylie statue I was working on up until I started Jake. I’ve made a mould from the model, and will be attempting to cast her in the next couple of weeks.

I’ve been doing a bit more work on the bust as you can see changing the polo-neck to a open necked shirt. I think it looks better. Obviously there’s still some work to do. What do you think? Also any ideas as to were it should be sited if and when it’s evetually cast?

Hi Dave, Good to hear your an artist to. Both my inlaws were art teachers now retired, and my wife Julia has her own pet portait business(www.jpetportraits.co.uk). but I work three shifts in a local factory making flavours for crisps. I hate it and would much rather be sculpting or painting(I’m just starting in oils), but it pays the mortgage.
As for contacting Jake’s family. I hoping someone in the group is in touch with them and will make them aware of what I’m doing, Then get in touch via this thread.
I’ll change the collar over the next couple of days, and post another picture when it’s done.
