I don’t think I find individual lines difficult, it’s more a matter of finding the correct way through the maze of quite a number of his songs. By which, I mean that so many songs have verse structures where one line in one verse can easily lead into another line from a different verse in the same song. I really need to start practicing Jake songs again…..
Well, what can I say? I’m in Thackstasy! This is such a brilliant collection. I’m one of those people who came to Jake’s music late, so never had the opportunity to see him live. It’s great to see the TV appearances that brought him to public notice. And as a guitarist it’s a great opportunity to see his playing style. Considering he was more or less self taught it’s amazing the economy with which he plays and makes his fingering changes – that’s the sort of economy that they try to drum into you when learning the basics of classical guitar, but clearly innate for Jake.
The TV slots are all obviously rehearsed and staged, but the section from Cambridge Folk Festival is sublime – you can see so clearly how invested Jake is in his performance. I’ve been going to Cambridge annually for about 30 years now and I’d give my eye teeth to have been going when Jake was there and to have had the chance to chat to him. So, I’ll have to make do with feasting repeatedly on this generous offering.
I have to offer sincere thanks to the members of the Project who made this happen – I can’t imagine the amount of time and effort you had to invest to make it come to fruition, but I truly appreciate it. THANK YOU!!
Very excited by this and order placed!
Thanks to those of you who have put in so much work to make this happen. This is lovely. Who arranged it?
I sang a choral setting some years ago, arranged by Roger Lawrence who is the director of Felsted Choral Soc.I listened via iPlayer. I think for any Thackoraks (who on here did coin that one?) it would never have been long enough. I really did like FT’s homage, it was very Jake-esque. Also very happy to have learned via the programme of Jake articles for the Catholic Herald – a new seam for me to mine as they appear to be available via their online archive – read one already and I can hear his dulcet tones right through it. Also very please for the download link to the programme.
I am like ghee………….clarified.
Merci
Are you sure the ’81 footage was Cambridge? When the 1st of it came on I thought Cambridge too, but a section of the same footage a bit later had a footnote saying it was some date in September ’81 (it did specify, I just don’t remember which one) – Cambridge, as far as I know, has always been the last weekend of July each year, although I’m happy to be corrected on all counts.
