It would certainly generate some (more) publicity!
Recurring theme, of course the hierarchical crescendo of authority figures, witness, ‘The Hole’ to add to the two examples already in this thread. There must be more!
Wonderful, thought I had missed the two programmes as picking Shona up from the airport, but they were repeated about 11:30, so we stayed up ’till 2am watching them (shame I had to be in at work 8:30 today!! Never mind)
Laughed out loud at ‘The Bull’ appearing so early, (remembering Jake saying, ‘I keep trying to get the BBC to play this one, I quite like it, I quite like it!’) Great choice of songs to play, ‘Bull’ and ‘Remembrance’ would still mean a lot today even to those who’ve never heard him before. Enjoyed seeing the old photo’s and clips. Question: Where was the later 1981 concert footage from? Incidentally, I have never seen an audience look more bemused by what they were hearing, but Jake plughed on manfully!Yes, this was subject of extended discussion on one of the discussion boards and was revisited at length during the ‘post show indian’ in Holmfirth. The only thing we seemed to agree on, on both occasions, was that there were several/ many interpretations of the song, particularly the last verse, some people sing the last verse, some don’t and despite strongly held theories on the meaning of it all, no-one was able to convince the others that their theory was correct.
Doesn’t answer the question, I know, but there you go!I’m surprised she didn’t take the obvious opportunity to air ‘Last Will and Testament’ as the perfect set of instructions to those attending funerals…
PhilAfter this weekends show in Knutsford I was reminded of a beauty: ‘For he was shy, as Blacksmiths often are’. Throws up more questions than answers.
No-one does a love song quite like Jake. (Love song for a BUS for goodness sake?)
Encourage him to listen to ‘Blacksmith&..’ though as, of course, beautiful as the words are, Jake DOES add a little to it in performance…Yes, definitely, Yay!
I agree, ‘POTTERY?’ spat out with with such disbelief seems to sum up the town/country divide of the song. Love it.
Apologies, I knew this might happen…
Have just been away on hols and remote from ‘e’ mail. Shona, my wife did find two messages in my junk about the above from Pam Archer and another one. Neither could be opened in the Croatian internet cafe.
If YOU have sent me an ‘e’ mail and I havn’t replied could you please send me it again, sorry.
Phil Neal (address in previous post)When singing ‘Bantam cock’ usually forget the line ‘gave me a grin and a terrible wink, the way that rapists do’ is coming and sing it anyway but I think it seems a ‘shocking’ word to use these days. No-one seems to mind too much.
Just goes to show, doesn’t it??
Annoyingly though he could occasionally rescue those situations by shuffling the words of the other verses around, but as Malcy says, a recipe for disaster..
Don’t quite know why I was a ‘visitor’ there, but never mind.
I meant to add that the WORDS are a minefield, ESPECIALLY when you think you know them.
My personal tip is for the tricky repetetive bits is to have some way of remembering what letter the phrase starts with and link the sentences together
Eg: (Country bus)Rusty and you’re dusty
and then Though you may stumble…
See, R, S, TWell, that’s the general idea, obviously doesn’t always work, and I’ve probably got that example wrong anyway but see what you think…
I agree that seeing Jake on video transforms and enhances one’s impression of him as a performer. I listened to (and loved) Jake for about 23 years before I saw any moving (no pun intended) footage of him (Last Will and Testament at Jakes wake in York).I have since enjoyed much ‘bootleg ‘ footage courtesy of members of this group and it has really changed the way I see him. Doesn’t solve the problem of how to see some but if the previous ‘Jakefests’ are anything to go by there is often some footage screened at some stage so book your tickets soon!
