It’s a great pleasure to see the membership of this site rising steadily (503 as I type this) – but it occured to me that it is (mostly) the same people posting here as on Topica. So who is everyone? Care to leave a note here and let us know?
Starters:
My name is Ian Burdon and live in Edinburgh. I remembered Jake from TV in the late 60s and through the 70s but got hooked when I saw him at the Cambridge Folk Festival in August 1981 and thereafter at the George Square Theatre in Edinburgh.

Hello all, oldies and newbies alike!
I’m Pam, from Solihull, been a fan of JT since the 1970’s, thanks to Woman’s Hour using "Lah-di-Dah" as the sig to one of their serials in 1970 (if anyone can identify the serial I’d love to hear about it).
Went to see him at various folk clubs and theatres and always loved the humour, his way with words, the poignancy, and the satire – but mostly he was a really lovely man.
It’s great that there is now lots about him on the internet – follow the links from this site if you haven’t found them yet, – and the people here are – well I was going to say wonderful, but that’s a bit OTT (!). I’m especially pleased with all the new activity here, and would love to see some postings from new people, and the ones we haven’t heard from for some time. We seem to be developing quite a large contingent from outside the UK too.
Love the Jakefests, meeting everyone, hearing the songs and stories. Highly recommended!
Following Ian’s example with personal details, I have a husband, three grown up "children", three delicious grand-daughters, a cat, but no guitars or any other musical instrument, not even a decent voice……………. and no website or avatar either.

Well, hello. I’m new. On December 24th (i.e. last Friday) I’d never heard of Jake Thackray so I can’t help but feel I’ve missed his prime as a performer. I’m 25 years old, and my aged father gave me the "Very Best of…" CD for Christmas. By lunchtime I’d learned that Quentin Howard thinks highly of him – and also that The Lodger is one of the funniest songs I’d ever heard. If anyone’s still looking for favourite sentences then "But I’m British so my upper lip was stiff" did it for me. As it were.
My father being the inspirational and rather drunk man that he is, decided I would probably enjoy the work of Jake Thackray based on the fact that I am very keen on artists such as Tom Lehrer, Flanders & Swann, Victor Borge and Gilbert & Sullivan. I also enjoy the work of Eminem and the Red Hot Chili Peppers but that would seem less relevant here.
Anyway, as I returned to the office yesterday (and have just shy of bugger all to do), I thought I’d have a wander through the internet to see whether anyone else has heard of Jake Thackray. Lo and behold. So here I am.
And, as I said: Hello.
And very welcome you are too Keiwit, if you’ve been hooked then you’re in the right place. Keep your eyes on this board both for archive footage of Jake and for news of opportunities to hear the songs kept alive in performance and meet others from this board at the same time. Two for the price of one, what a result!

I rather hope he isn’t, as I’ve already referred to him as "aged" and "drunk" and I haven’t yet been a member for 24 hours.
On a positive note, I did say he was inspirational. Unfortunately he only really inspires me to drink and get old.

Getting older? To be recommended (after all what else is there?) The trick is to Grow Old Disgracefully, like quite a few of us here…………

Keiwit, if your dad is here you’ve only said what he’d expect you to say, and if he’s not – then get him here, he belongs!
There are lots of Jake events happening in 2005 – (could someone list them here, as I’ve forgotten some of them……..?) – hope to see you at some of them.

Since my last post I have called my dad just to check he’s not here. Luckily at present he can’t get to his computer because I have too many sisters.
I do have a sneaking suspicion he’s going to have a look at some point though, so if you do see him please make him welcome. Just don’t give him any money. It only encourages them.

I’m Lynda, a crabby old bat face in New Zealand who briefly met Jake in the 70’s and saw him many more times on TV. I was hooked from the first and have been ever since.
Of the 3.8 million people in New Zealand, seven and a half have heard of Jake Thackray – but I’m working on it!!
My favourite song is ‘Lah-de-dah’ for very personal reasons but I could really say that there isn’t a JT song I don’t like. He was a wordsmith par excellence and because I’m a writer too I deeply appreciate the fine crafting of his work.
I live in the country, have two sons (grown and flown) and the only imperfect thing in my life is that I can’t get to any of the Jake orientated events.

You’ve worried me a bit now, I always believed my dad had only 4 kids. Maybe I do have a brother somewhere… I always felt like I should have one. Maybe in New Zealand. Come to think of it, my dad did live in New York for a while so maybe I have some rather obese siblings who can’t pronounce simple words correctly.
You see, I have 3 sisters. Not in a "My landlady had 3 lovely daughters" sort of way you understand. This, coupled with the fact that we all had to go to church on Sunday morning, meant that all my friends became better at football than I did.
You always hear about the child prodigies who’ve had their talents nurtured since they were 8 years old. Whether it‚Äôs golf, guitar, fishing or juggling. Anything. When I was 8 years old my parents noticed my prodigious talent for eating crisps.
Anyway, enough of my woes. I can’t really complain, I work in local government so to be mediocre is something of a blessing. To be borderline insane means you are promotion material.
