Welcome! Jake was truly unique, and one of our greatest and most underrated songwriters. If you want to do a deep dive into his extraordinary body of work, the CDs and DVDs here are a great place to start. His life was equally remarkable, as the biography (of which I’m co-author) amply demonstrates.

Apologies for the slowness to answer your questions, but, as you will have guessed by now, the Forum is not much used now. If you are on Facebook, seek out the Jake Thackray Appreciation page, which has more than 500 followers.
Jake indeed had those two pieces published in The Listener. Both of them are in Jake Thackray – The Unsung Writer, an anthology of his prose and poetry which I edited and published last year. Details of the book are on my website: http://www.paulthompsonmusic.co.uk.
We unfortunately have no details at all of Jake’s movements in Brittany. We have the name of one school at which he taught in Lille, and he says that he also taught in Jesuit schools in Algeria. You can read more about this in the biography of which I am co-author, Beware of the Bull – The Enigmatic Genius of Jake Thackray.

Welcome aboard. Sorry for the slowness to reply, but a lot of the discussion now tends to happen on the Jake Thackray Appreciation page on Facebook, so if you are on FB, I’d recommend going there. I’m the co-author of the Jake Thackray biography, Beware of the Bull. In all the research done for the book I never came across a song about shingles, I’m afraid. It is possible that Jake did do such a song (we found 25 lost songs during the course of research for the book, in TV and radio archives), but he certainly never released it on record. ATB Paul
Welcome aboard! I’m afraid that we cannot make the material available online, as we don’t have a licence for this and won’t be able to get one. The material is fabulous, so if you don’t have a DVD player, it might be worth getting one – lots of them turn up secondhand in charity shops and on eBay for very little money. I’m sorry we cannot do more to help.
A very belated thank you to you, Mark. We are so pleased to have been able to release this material at last, and it is the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking work on editing and mastering by Jamie McCoan.
Good vinyl hunting, Danny, and well spotted regarding the differences between the different versions. I’ve never had the chance to compare mono and stereo albums. When I finally picked up a copy of the single version of Lah-Di-Dah I was surprised to discover the difference from the album version. It is a shame that it isn’t available digitally. I have no doubt that the aim was to make Jake sound more obviously commercial and radio-friendly.
