None taken: I was aiming for dry, self deprecating wit but obviously fell short!

I’m not certain which element of that list put you in mind of me (mediocre or borderline insane?) but I suppose I ought to say that I work in central government rather than local: it’s your call whether the general principle still holds. It seems to me that the two categories are not mutually exclusive though.

I thought you worked for a well known motoring association anyway?

There are currently two cds available (and if you run down to your local HMV you may well find them in a sale for £4.99 or thereby) failing which Amazon z-shops can be a useful source. A third appeared early last year then rapidly disappeared.

And very welcome you are too Keiwit, if you’ve been hooked then you’re in the right place. Keep your eyes on this board both for archive footage of Jake and for news of opportunities to hear the songs kept alive in performance and meet others from this board at the same time. Two for the price of one, what a result!

              Cheers

I confess to mixed feelings. As a programme for a general audience it was good and I notice that the bar to the left shows 10 new members on this site today – Hi folks! welcome along.

For some of the Jake geeks who inhabit this and other boards (amongst whose number I’m obliged to number myself) there were some things which irritated. Probably only a geek would notice that despite a commentary talking about On Again! On Again! and it being a showcase for Jake’s attitude to authority, in fact it was an expurgated "BBC-ised" version of the song which was played (no farts and no blessed virgin verse). And while VLS might have thought it a belated Wake, well actually…

However these grumbles are no doubt a sign of my annual decent into festive grumpiness. Jake returned to the ears of the nation. Hooray!

Hmm, would they be the traditional values of the travelling poor being forced to give birth in a stable because the hotels were full of people complying with the actions of a puppet government relentlessly enthusiastically imposing the will of an occupying superpower (even one that did bring aquaducts and sanitation), or the massacre of the innocents?

Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose, seems to me.

Being serious for a moment, some time ago I used to sit on a thing which we have in Scotland called the Childrens Panel, which is akin to being a lay magistrate for issues arising from children in trouble for one reason or another. Sadly, contrary to Malcy’s rant, the emergency cases which we had over the Christmas/New Year period were some of the more unpleasant ones.

Interesting. I actually thought better of that last post and hit the cancel button – but it posted anyway! Curses.

Yes. Ian Watson is correct and as a general rule I would take Jake’s own version as definitive! This saves me from noting that cocoa is aliterative and has similar soporific effects to Kierkegarde and Kant .

However in a spirit of pedantry I ought to note that Jake’s did change some of his lyrics over time and in at least one case – Thomas Haverley – the lyric provided in Jake’s Progress differs from the only recorded version which I’ve heard (on BBC’s Camera and the Song) .

The version of Cenotaph in that programme also differs from that which was later preserved on Radio. The changes might be thought of as the song evolving – although in both cases my personal preference is for the earlier versions: but as with a number of things that probably says more about me than anything else!

Hi Pam, yes I’ve thought of eBay but thought I’d check here first. I have this perverse notion that Thackerites are likely to be trustworthy despite all previous evidence to the contrary!
