My transcription was taken from a DVD copy of the clip which was sent to me by a Topica member and which I passed to Gordon who then put it on this board. Having read this discussion I have just played through the DVD again expecting to have to buckle beneath the combined expertise of Judith, Keith and Richard.
I remain convinced, however, that in respect of the first line in question I am correct – ie ‘they are’ rather than ‘the other’ although I concede that it is marginal. As regards the second line, this is clearly a mistranscription on my part but just as I interpolated ‘they are’ neither does he vocalise ‘who are fighting’ – he says ‘fight’ leaving us to surmise that there is an implict ‘who’ in there.
I don’t agree with the textual analysis below either – I don’t think that a contrast is being set up as Keith suggests; one could equally argue that he is in fact setting up an ironic contrast between intent (and self-delusion) and the actual effect and therefore ‘they are’ remains perfectly consistent.

Malcy’s cd of the ‘pick’ of York excludes, by definition, a version of "I Stayed Off Work Today" which has now entered Jakefest lore as either the Swedish be-bop variations or ISOWT (Slight Return). I have also been known to refer to it as an out-take from Captain Beefheart’s Jake Mask Replica, but let’s not go there. Malcy and I conceived the idea of performing this as a duet inasmuch as he would play and sing and I would just play along with a different guitar part and we sort of assumed that this would all work out fine. Alas, aside from a quick run through on the stairs five minutes before performing, we made the error of not actually rehearsing and the quality of the resulting performance was in inverse proportion to the quantity of Theakston’s Black Sheep Ale which had been consumed.
For our second attempt, at the Tramshed, we practiced (oh how we practiced) and shared vocal duties. We were even sober. Alas in the fourth verse I damned a bishop when I should have blown him (an easy mistake to make in this ecclesiastical day and age) and the result was a near miss as the video footage which I have seen evidences.
Our third attempt was at the Magazine in Wallasey where, you will not be surprised to learn, the quality of the performance was in inverse proportion to the quantity of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord bitter which had been consumed (and the absence of a rehearsal).
But guess what we’ll be doing in Torrington, suckers for punishment that we are?

I suspect courts martial is because martial is an adjective which happens to come after the noun – apart from this reversal in order the construction is no different grammatically than civil courts or criminal courts
Not dormant, just very very quiet. Since giving it a run-out and Magfest I’ve taken “La Legend de la Nonne” back to the workshop to be tweaked here and there and I’m going back to have a second crack at Les Copains d’Abord.
Since Projet Brassens will be doing their stuff in Torrington I’m not preparing anything new for September though.
I’m always interested in helping with this sort of thing if I can though.
