Oh no – how did I miss it – I guess because there has been so much material available recently what with the DVD and the awesome French class video, it seems Jake is with us as much as he ever was. Unfortunately yesterday – Christmas Eve would have been the 12th anniversary of our loss. I will have a melancholic toast – a whisky mac of course, to our man and I’m sure others here from around the globe will join me.

          Gather them now for rosebuds’sake.
And if your hands aren’t too encumbered
Gather a bud or two for Jake.”

I don’t think this was Jake’s Emily. Look here:

Brasso!!! Wow – I forgot all about that – I did a version of Chanson Pour L’Auvergnat in English – I don’t even have a copy of that.

I wonder if we might take better advantage of the opportunities offered by social media – Facebook, blogs, Pinterest, Tumblr and especially Twitter – these are great multipliers when looking to get out your message. I love the suggestion of approaching Stephen Fry – do you know one “Tweet” from Stephen will reach 4,552,246 people instantly!!!! This website already offers Twitter and Facebook links – I am not on Facebook – but it should be fairly easy to set up a petition on Facebook for the BBC to release Jake material – all it would require would be a casual click from your “friends” – and their friends and before you know it you will have a lot more names on your side than you originally thought. As a little experiment I just created a Pinterest page – in about 15 minutes – here it is – http://pinterest.com/richardshields/jake-thackray/ – I only have a handful of followers – but if one of them likes this and forwards it to one of their friends …you get the idea.

Nice to know we will be able to do our traditional Christmas Eve toast this year. Glad to see you back Gordon!

Great stuff – all 3 versions. Thanks for keeping the flame burning. Like the meaty bass sound you get.

If you do a search for Jake Thackray on the Desert Island Discs Archive page you will find that 3 people have taken a Jake song with them onto their island.

I think he sounds more like John Cooper-Clarke.

I have just read the posting on Pismotality and suggest every member here do the same. What a wonderful overview Tony, and one which – if I may be presumptuous – would serve well as liner notes to any future release of Jake’s work. At the very least this site should link to the article somewhere.

“A Dancer” could be “The SInger” from the lyrics of the song only one reference to her being a singer but plenty of dancing references

“My darling is a dancer and nightly we go
Stepping it out together lightly, toe to toe”

“Oh my lady is a dancer and nightly we skip,
Stepping it out together lightly, hip to hip”

“Oh my lady is a dancer and nightly we fly
Stepping it out together lightly, thigh to thigh.
La la la la la la li la li
Stepping it out together lightly, thigh to thigh.”

So I just finished watching it – You simply must get this. As has been noted before this is also very useful as a guitar lesson – you can see just what a really smart guitarist Jake was. My wife – an Oberlin and Yale music school graduate couldn’t believe the voice leadings he was coming up with – she feels of all the guitarists she has heard he plays most like a pianist. His playing is great throughout – for me a real highlight is the version of To Do With You – always a favourite song anyway – but his chords on this one are just magic. He is in good voice throughout – what a great Christmas treat.

My copy just popped through the letterbox this afternoon here in New York. I’m working today so I’ll get a chance to watch it later.
