I’ve just (re)discovered Jake and have been listening to nothing else for the last week or so. My mum had a copy of "Live Performance" when I was small and I remember liking "The Hole", and on a whim the other day I downloaded it and "Jake in a Box" from iTunes – nearly 100 songs for not much more than 20 quid!
The funny stuff made the most immediate impression – "On Again! On Again!", "The Lodger" and "I Stayed off Work Today" being the standouts – but the expanded version of "Live Performance" and the box set have introduced me to his less comedic songs, and some of them are even better. Now go to YouTube and type in "Jake Thackray" lots of clips of Jake himself and some of this groups members tribute concerts and some home recordings of his many, many fans.
Fortunately this year I’ll be in the company of a few Brits ( here in New York ) so Jake will be played at our Christmas party.
The toast is "absent friends"I actually quite like the idea of impromptu performances of any sort, and of Jake songs in particular. A sort of Urban(e) Thackerism. I remember walking down Princes Street in Edinburgh during the festival in 1983 with a bunch of musician friends – we had just been busking the military tattoo queue (a great money maker – that queue moves s-l-o-w-l-y) a guy ran out of a pub and said the act he booked failed to show and could we do about half an hour – off we went in – had a great gig and one of the songs we did was Jolly Captain. We got paid and they gave us a couple of pints – it was all over in half an hour. Urban Thackerism!
Well – its been a while but 3000 today!!!!!! Come on folks time to carry Gordon round the field on our shoulders and throw him into the swimming pool.

Thanks for that info – I had never heard of Joost – now I’m completely addicted – what a fantastic idea. But then what would you expect from the guys who gave us Kazaa and Skype.

In response to Funkyronster’s question – although I similarly cannot claim encyclopaedic knowledge of Jake’s songs – these lyrics don’t strike me as his style – possibly Flanders and Swann – but maybe a bit risque for their time. Could it be Benny Hill?
In response to Hugh’s question – there is a new and growing comprehensive site about Tiswas and Jake’s name does not appear in the listings for "Musicians", "Comedians" or "Other Guests". They do however state that this is a work in progress and as such is incomplete. Here is the link to keep up with them:
Welcome Matt (no pun intended!) I’m Richard from New York via Glasgow. Its always great to hear about recent converts to Jake’s music. I’ve been a fan for decades and I envy you the joy of hearing this great music for the first time. If you have a look around this site you will see there is a lot of stuff to catch up on – something tells me you are in for a treat.

It shouldn’t be a surprise – I love System of a Down – also Faust, Throbbing Gristle, Albert Ayler, Merzbow, Psychic TV, Derek Bailley and Pigface – if its good its good I say.
